OVERVIEW
Fjell'Byr is a feline community that is a mix of feral cats and Fjell. The Fjell are a unique hybrid species of lynx and cat mixed together. They live far away, high up in the mountain ranges that oversee the Clans of the Lake. To journey from the Clans to Fjell'Byr takes several quarter-moons, and is not considered easy to travel. Unlike the Clans of the Lake, they do not insist on borders, and instead welcome all to traverse or visit their community, known as a Byr.
(NOTE: There is a lot of text to read through! Please make sure to read through thoroughly only if interested in making a FJELL'BYR character!)
5000 moons before Start Date [ 8/19/2019 ]
Thousands upon thousands of moons ago, there were the First Fjell.
They were large, powerful lynxes, who roamed the mountainside with ease, their large paws, claws, and thick fur to survive the elements. They kept to the mountainside, rarely ever traveling outside of its boundaries, the mountains providing the Fjell all that they may need. Finding comradeship with one another, they began to hunt, then live, in a loose, large community with one another. They found that by doing so they were able to catch more prey, and ward off even the largest Miktonn, or sharptooths. Names were not felt as necessary: they just referred to one another as “Fjell”.
One day, a group of newcomers led by a Fjell named Dell’brun brought a band of strange-looking Fjell into the mountainside. These Fjell did not have large muzzles and paws, but slender, rounded shapes. Their ears were smaller, and their eyes were much larger. They sported brilliant colors of amber, orange, fallen leaves, and more in their flashy pelts with strange, unique markings. Some of their teeth chattered, but they had managed to make it deep into the mountain’s peaks.
At first, this surprised the Fjell: hardly any other fjell-looking creatures ventured this far, besides the Miktonn. But soon, it became apparent as to why they had made it so far so easily:
They had divided themselves into specific groups, based on the group’s talents.
Dell’Brun brought prey in greetings to the mountain dwellers, their mew warm, friendly. It comes to light that Dell’Brun and his group had escaped the paws of these terrifying, giant, upwalking beasts, who had trapped them in inescapable nests inside a giant sea monster. As soon as they were all free, they ran north, towards the sky, led by a shining star that burned brighter than the others.
Soon, the mountain dwellers and Dell’Brun’s group came to work together, finding strength in numbers. The mountain dwellers picked up the newcomers’ group to hone talents together, soon forming what would be known as factions. From this combined way of life came laws, and from these laws came community. No longer were they merely surviving--they were thriving.
Through their thriving, they came to learn how to commune with their ancestors watching over them: Stjar’Keld.
For thousands of moons, the Fjell’Byr flourished in the mountains, their way of life enduring even the largest predators and harshest weather. But with their laws and organization came opinions on how to live. These opinions became arguments, arguments led to divides, divides led to disparities.
Despite these disagreements, Fjell’Byr still thrived. It wasn’t until recent moons, with new, revolutionary ideas that challenged how things had always been, did significant changes come to Fjell’Byr…
10 moons before Start Date [8/19/2019]
While there had always been three factions, the Circle hadn’t always had representation for all three.
Only in recent times have the Scouts begun to have delegates of representation within their ranks. This only occurred after an uprising by the scouts faction under the leadership of the last Val’kuum. Even still, the scouts are only represented by three representatives, rather than the five the other two factions are granted.
The Circle always consisted of the best, most respected, felines of their faction. Each faction was overseen by the Head, voted on by their faction, and confirmed by the Val’Kuum, La’Kuum, and Hil’Kuum, to guide their faction while they oversaw responsibilities of the entirety of Fjell’Byr. To recognize them as such, they were given special titles:
For the Champions, their head champion earned the title Bers’Kuum.
For the Disciples, their head disciple earned the title Urt’Kuum.
And for the Scouts, their head scout earned the title Olv’Kuum.
Despite these recognized titles, and their importance, the Circle omitted the Olv’Kuum and the rest of the scout faction’s input for decision making to all of the Fjell’Byr, for thousands of moons. It wasn’t until the Scouts, led by Olv’Kuum Bear’s Heart, fought for their faction to be heard, that the Fjell’Byr recognize the need for their input.
While it took a bit for the Circle to settle in with their new dynamics, the scouts’ faction began to find a voice for themselves within the decision making for the Byr.
There is still residual tension, however: there are still those who hold the opinion that, like the Far’maor’byr, the scouts should not have such a voice within the Circle. There are grumbles, whispers behind backs, but for the sake of peace, the Fjell hold their tongue discussing this topic any further.
10 moons after Start Date [8/19/2019]
With the passage of time came the passage of leadership: the previous Val’Kuum retired, leaving Val’Kuum Jagged as the new Val’Kuum.
It’s not uncommon for a Val’Kuum to take a while to choose the Fjell’Byr’s next heir, but the time that this new Val’Kuum took was at first noticeable, then palpable, then became the gossip of the Fjell’Byr. This was the first time that the Skald’Ga could remember in their lives and stories choosing an heir taking so long.
For moons, La’Kuum Night Shade worked with Val’Kuum Jagged to try and find the Fjell’Byr’s next heir. At her instruction, Night Shade sought answers with Stjar’keld, hoping to perhaps learn where they could find their next heir.
Moons passed, then seasons, and still no luck with their search. While Fjell’Byr could continue without its heir for now, if it were to last, they would need to find their heir soon…
48 moons after Start Date
After moons of searching, Val’Kuum Jagged had still not found her heir. Once more, the Herbalist asked for Stjar’Keld’s guidance:
Where could their heir be?
With a fiery streak in the sky, their ancestors sent a message, to guide them to descend from the mountains to find their heir.
Descent from the mountains was no easy task: it was a long journey, that often saw all faces of the moon along the way. The Byr needed its heir, however, so the factions were ready to try.
Val’Kuum Jagged, La’Kuum Night Shade, Bers’Kuum Swallow’s Whisker, and Olv’Kuum Bear’s Heart prepared to depart. In their stead, they left the Urt’Kuum as the acting head of the Circle while they were gone. It wasn’t known how long this journey would take:
They may be looking for their heir for seasons, adventuring out into the unknown.
Leaving the Fjell’Byr in capable paws, the Fjell’Byr patrol descended from their home nestled away in the mountains.
With them traveled the hopes of the Byr, that their journey would be successful.
60 moons after Start Date
Moons and seasons came and passed, with the Urt’Kuum and the Council leading the Fjell while their Val’Kuum and La’Kuum were away.
One morning, there are cries heard from the camp’s entrance:
Val’Kuum Jagged had returned…
…and in her stead was an outsider, with many more strange-looking Fjell.
The patrol explained that they were cats who resided by a lake below the mountains, in Byrs they called “Clans”. Stjar’Keld had not led them astray, for within these lake Byrs, they had found their heir:
A Fjell from the lake Byrs, who called herself Singesight.
The Fjell patrol wastes no time: for the time being, the newcomers are accepted as Far’maor’byr, without faction, and invited to begin exploring their new home…
But be warned, newcomers to the Fjell’Byr: the whispers calling for old ways and the strangeness of this all still echo throughout the Fjell’Byr’s camp…
Deep within the mountains, where the frigid cold wind chills every living creature to their very bones, live a feline community known as the Fjell'byr, who call themselves the Fjells...
BASIC LORE/SPECIES INFO
The Fjell are a unique feline hybrid mix of the short/longhair feral cat, and lynxes. They live within the mountainous range above the Clans of the Lake, their incredibly thick pelts allowing them to thrive in such a cold environment. Due to how long and thick their pelts can grow, Fjell cannot survive the Greenleaf of the Clans - they are in danger of heat stroke.
IMPORTANT ANATOMY NOTES
OVERALL APPEARANCE:
1. The fjell display a range of phenotypes in overall appearance, from pure shorthair feral cat (top left image), to a visual mix of a cat and lynx (top right image). They can display a mix and variety of trait combinations appearing above: for example, they could have the build of a feral cat, but the large hybrid head shape, muzzle, and ear length of the hybrid. Another example is having the large paws and long legs, but a feral cat face shape, muzzle size, and ear shape. The range of combinations / visual appearance between the left and right images is essentially limitless.
2. They are on average larger than the feral cat: at maximum height, they stand at 16 inches tall at the shoulder, and with the purchase of oversized, they can be at maximum 17 inches tall at the shoulder.
3. Their legs are much longer, more lean, and less rounded than feral cats. They possess larger claws as well.
4. Their paws are much larger, flatter, and less rounded than feral cats, to allow them ease with climbing such steep, rocky, uneven terrain.
5. A feral cat's spine slopes upwards, in contrats to the fjell, whose spine actually dips ever so slightly.
6. The feral cat's torso is much longer than the hybrid - a fjell will have a stockier, more "rectangular-shaped" torso, comparably shorter in overall length.
7. Their tails are much shorter than a feral cat's - they tend to on average be half the length as a feral cat's tail.
FUR LENGTH:
1. The fjell can range from shorter fur like the image on the left, due to having a different, thicker fur texture that is noticeable in touch, or can possess fur as long as the bottom right image. It's more common to possess long fur than short.
2. The fjell are the only cats who can slightly break the "hair" tuft length rule only - eyes may be partially hidden / covered, but please note: the eyes cannot ever be completely obscured/hidden. You could consider the bottom right image as an example of this maximum "hair" tuft length, with consideration to style flexibility.
FACE TRAITS:
1. The fjell possess larger, longer muzzles than feral cats.
2. Their ears are larger, and much more pointed than feral cats. Feral cats have more rounded ears in shape.
3. Their pupils are naturally round and large, but can constrict like a feral cat's into slits.
4. The face shape is far more angular, and overall larger, then the feral cat's.
LAWS OF FJELL’BYR:
1. Fjell’Byr is not defined by borders or claimed territory: the mountain range’s ever changing seasons support what the Byr needs.
2. Fjell who are Byr-less, such as rogues and loners, are allowed to traverse Fjell’Byr’s land so long as they remain peaceful. They are referred to as far’maor.
3. If a far’maor wishes to join Fjell’Byr, they must be recognized as such by the current Val’Kuum, to become far’maor’byr. One’s background has no bearing on their ability to become a Fjell: all are welcome.
4. If a Far’maor’byr is called to assist a faction, they must do their best to answer the request for help.
5. The fledglings are the future for all: they must be protected, and not purposefully caused harm.
6. A broody who fails to protect the fledglings, or purposefully places them in harm’s way, will be forced to give up a life of serving Fjell’Byr in this manner.
7. Enemies to Fjell’Byr must be granted one chance to flee the Byr if engaged in combat with a Fjell.
8. To take another’s life is the most grave evil a Fjell could do to one another, with the exceptions of moments in which there is no other choice. One must always grant the chance to flee.
9. When a Fjell join Stjar’keld, their ceremony must be held the very next time the sun rises. This is so their spirit can find their way to Stjar’keld, guided by the morning sun.
10. To interrupt, delay, or halt the ceremony of a departed Fjell is not permitted.
11. Harm between Fjell is not tolerated and will be punished accordingly.
12. Any punishments are determined by the Fjell’s respective faction leader, the Council, or the High Ranks, and will be enforced by the Champions. The High Ranks may call for and enforce a punishment on the spot.
13. A punished Fjell may be sent to the Brygg, where they will receive sustaining rations until released. They may be demoted to Scout or stripped of their faction rank entirely. Other details of punishment are determined based on the severity of the crime.
LAWS OF THE DISCIPLES:
1. To become a Disciple requires a vow of Pacifism: a Disciple is never to engage in violence, beyond necessary survival and no other choice, such in the case in hunting.
2. One is always granted the chance to renounce their past life, all wrongdoings and choices included, by taking this vow: the Herbalist will have final say, in the end.
3. If a Disciple partakes in any violence, they immediately forfeit the path of a Disciple for the rest of their life. They are not able to retake this vow.
4. The Disciples must address all ailments that occur within Fjell’Byr: they are responsible for guaranteeing the wellness of the Byr.
LAWS OF THE SCOUTS:
1. The Scouts must ensure that Fjell’Byr never goes hungry, through hunting and distributing rations.
2. Scouts are expected to attend at least two patrols daily, health and weather permitting.
3. Repeated breaking of these laws can result in removal from the scout faction permanently.
LAWS OF THE CHAMPIONS:
1. The Champion must always engage combat when called: avoiding battle is not permitted.
2. One may only flee a battle when peril is ensured for the Champion’s life.
3. The Champion must enforce the laws of Fjell’Byr, and the punishments for those who break these laws.
THE HIGH RANKS
MONARCH (The Val’kuum) - The Monarch is the Fjell who leads the entirety of Fjell’Byr. They are given the title “Val’Kuum” to recognize their role for Fjell’Byr. When it comes to making the final decisions for the Byr, it is the Monarch whose authority is the final word on the subject.
The Monarch’s word is considered final, and law. It is only through a vote through the Circle can a decision by the Monarch potentially be overturned.
When it comes to communication from Stjar’Keld, such as what a prophecy could mean, it is not the Val’Kuum’s final decision. This is left to Fjell’Byrs Herbalist.
THE HEIR (The Hil’kuum) - The Heir is the next in line to lead Fjell’Byr, and helps oversee final decisions to be made for the Byr. To recognize their role for Fjell’Byr, they are given the title “Hil’Kuum”.
Traditionally, the heir is found and chosen by a special connection that the Val’Kuum feels with their Hil’Kuum. This is commonly a Fjell from their family, such as their littermates, kits, or related kin.
If there are no immediate Fjell who would serve well as Hil’Kuum to the Byr in the Val’Kuum’s family, then the Circle may try and seek out worthy cats in their factions, to vote upon potential candidates.
It is always the Val’Kuum who has final say on who will serve as Fjell’Byr’s next heir. By feeling an innate connection to one another, they know that their destinies are intertwined to continue leading Fjell’Byr.
The Hil’Kuum is typically found at a young age, traditionally found either by the time the Heir is 6-8 moons. It is not unheard of, however, for a much older cat to be chosen to serve as this role.
A Hil’Kuum can begin formal training as Fjell’Byr’s heir once they are at least 6 moons old. When they turn 8 moons old, they can begin to have final say to meetings with the Circle.
The Hil’Kuum is responsible for commanding the Head Champion, to aid in directing the Champion faction.
THE HERBALIST (The La’kuum) - Leader to the Disciple Faction and the one appointed to commune with Stjar’Keld, the Herbalist serves as the command of all things spiritual within Fjell’Byr. In regards to authority and respect, the La’Kuum can be thought of as second in command to the Byr’s Monarch, alongside the Hil’Kuum.
The Head Disciple is appointed as the La’Kuum, when the previous La’Kuum is no longer able to serve Fjell’Byr. When the Head Disciple becomes the La’Kuum, they are recognized with a blessing from Stjar’Keld.
HEAD DISCIPLE (The Urt’Kuum) - While the Herbalist is considered the leader of the Disciple faction, the Disciples will appoint a Head Disciple via their faction’s delegates to oversee daily faction activities and organization. To recognize their position, they are given the title “Urt’Kuum”.
Disciples who experience issues within their faction are expected to bring anything to the Head Disciple first: for anything that is beyond their own faction, or if a resolution cannot be found, the Herbalist will be consulted as the final say in the matter.
When it comes time to appoint a new La’Kuum, the Head Disciple will be chosen to succeed the former Herbalist.
HEAD CHAMPION (The Bers’Kuum) - While the Val’Kuum is considered the leader of the Champion faction, the Champions will appoint a Head Champion via their faction’s delegates to oversee daily faction activities and organization. To recognize their position, they are given the title “Bers’Kuum”.
Champions who experience issues within their faction are expected to bring anything to the Head Champion first: for anything that is beyond their own faction, or if a resolution cannot be found, the Heir will be consulted as the final say in the matter.
HEAD SCOUT (The Olv’Kuum) - The scouts are a bit unique in their faction, in that the Monarch or Heir are not necessarily considered the leader of their specific faction, due to recent changes in Fjell’Byr’s social hierarchy. They turn to the Olv’Kuum, the Head Scout, for these matters. The Head Scout is appointed by the delegates of their faction. If absolutely necessary, the Heir can be considered the final say in a decision within the scout faction.
Like the other Heads of their factions, the Head Scout manages day to day life and activities for their faction. When it comes to more serious matters, it is the Olv’Kuum that is considered to have the final word. Only when a conflict is so grievous the scouts cannot come to a resolution will the conflict be brought to either the Council, or the Monarch or Heir.
THE CIRCLE
The Circle is the decision-making body for Fjell’Byr. There are thirteen delegates appointed by voting within the delegate’s faction. There are five disciple delegates, five champion delegates, and three scout delegates.
Amid the Circle, there is a second, higher rank, position of authority, known as the Council. They are made up of the three factions’ appointed Heads, the Herbalist, the Heir, and the Monarch.
The delegates appointed for each faction can be trusted to handle minor decision making for their faction. The Circle will initiate discussion as necessary for the whole of Fjell’Byr, or to find a solution when the delegates of a faction cannot.
The Council is expected to discuss and make the more important decisions in relation to Fjell’Byr. When it comes to disagreements that come to an impasse within Fjell’Byr, it is the Council’s responsibility to come to a resolution.
THE CIRCLE AND DECISION-MAKING:
The Circle is made up of 13 delegates, three faction heads, the Herbalist, the Heir, and the Monarch, for a total of 19 cats. When a position for a delegate is available, the cats from said faction will vote for a cat to fill that position. The remainder of that faction’s delegates will then vote to approve or deny the delegate. If they are unable to come to a decision, the Head of that faction will make the final decision.
The delegates serve as the first filter through which decisions must pass. They vote on minor decisions and hold the initial vote for major decisions. These delegates are trusted by the Faction Heads and the High Ranks to make good decisions for minor items, such as where to patrol/hunt, the rations to be delivered, minor punishments, and basic dream interpretations. These decisions are typically made without calling upon the faction heads or High Ranks, though if a decision cannot be reached, or the delegates are unsure how to proceed, the full Circle may be called upon for assistance. While typically the delegates vote on items pertaining to their faction, they may sometimes be called upon by other faction delegates if a decision pertains to them, or if an outside perspective is desired. The delegates also serve as representatives of their respective factions, and are expected to vote alongside the will of their faction members. They may speak with members of their factions about potential issues their faction wishes to discuss, etc. The delegates are also able to present issues for debate and vote to the Circle, such as unfair treatment, punishment, etc. For larger decisions, such as the exile of a Byr member, the acceptance of a new Byr member, or more severe punishments/heavier decisions, the delegates will vote first, but their vote may be overruled by the Faction heads or High Ranks as seen fit. If a delegate is seen as no longer fit to serve, the other delegates may call for a full Circle vote on their removal, or the respective Faction Head may remove them without a vote. The High Ranks may remove a delegate at any time without a vote.
The Faction Heads serve as the second line of voting in the Circle. They often function to represent the delegates’ votes and opinions in their meetings with the High Ranks. Faction Heads are chosen from the available delegates, voted on by the delegates of their respective faction. This vote is then subject to the final approval of the High Ranks. Alternatively, the High Ranks may present a non-delegate Byr member to the delegates as a potential Faction Head, but this must then be voted on by the delegates. The Faction Heads may be called on to solve disputes among the delegates, or make a final decision on a contentious debate. On larger decisions, they are present for the voting, and will make the final call on a decision. They are able to overrule the delegate vote, but any time they overrule a delegate vote, this must be approved by the High Ranks. If a Faction Head is seen as no longer fit to serve, the other Faction Heads, or the delegates may call for a full Circle vote on their removal. Alternatively, the High Ranks may remove them without a vote at any time. The High Ranks serve as the final decision on any vote of removal for a Faction Head. The Faction Head for the Disciples becomes the Herbalist when the current Herbalist is no longer able to serve.
The Council serves as the last line of voting in the Circle. They will call upon those within the Circle they deem necessary for certain decisions, and will serve as the final say on any and all decisions. Even amongst the Council, the Val’kuum is able to make the final decision on any non-Stjar’keld related decisions, and the La’kuum is able to make the final decision on any Stjar’keld related decisions.
The Herbalist, Heir, and Monarch are not chosen necessarily by vote, though they may be removed via a vote. This vote may be called by any member of the Circle, but the vote must be unanimous from all delegates, faction leaders, and the remaining Council members. If removed, the Council Fjell will be replaced by the next in line for that position. In the case of the Heir, a new Heir will be chosen through the standard methods.
THE FACTIONS
DISCIPLES - Followers of the La’kuum, the Disciples oversee all healing, mending, and care to the entirety of Fjell’Byr. The practice of healing is considered wide, and expansive, ranging from wound treatment, herbal remedies, physical therapy, to wellness of the mind, and more. It is not uncommon for a specific Disciple to choose to specialize in a particular healing practice.
By choosing to become a Disciple, one takes a vow of Pacifism: once a Disciple, a Fjell cannot engage in violence whatsoever. The only violence considered permissible within this faction is hunting or fighting for one’s very own survival, given absolutely no other choice. Otherwise, any sort of physical violence will have one automatically removed from the Disciple faction.
A special aspect that the Disciple faction offers to Fjell’Byr is dream counseling. It’s very rare, almost unheard of, for any Disciple, or Fjell for that matter, to receive a message from Stjar’Keld. They can offer aid in dream interpretation to help discern what a Fjell’s troubled mind could be dwelling upon.
It is expected that the Herbalist will handle all matters related to Stjar’keld, and members of the Disciples should bring topics related to this to either the Head Disciple, or the Herbalist. It is very rare, and often frowned upon socially, for a Disciple to try and ascribe meaning to a message from Stjar’Keld. No matter what, however, it is the La’Kuum’s final say and interpretation.
Disciple responsibilities to the Byr:
1. A Disciple must never engage in violence: they are expected to flee battle, disengage from a hostile situation, and otherwise avoid physical conflict.
2. The Disciple faction is expected to maintain the overall health of Fjell’Byr. Any healing related topics are expected to be promptly answered by the Disciples.
3. Disciples can offer dream interpretation to Fjell’Byr members, as well.
CHAMPIONS - Champions are considered the defenders and fighting force of Fjell’Byr: their duties are to always battle train, to guard the Byr, and to be ready to fight for anything. Champions are expected to train to a level of fighting that will allow them to hold their own with predators such as the mountain eagles, or within a patrol even a Miktonn, or Sharptooth. A patrol of champions is expected to defeat a Sharptooth, or any other predators they are sent out to fight.
Champions are not expected to hunt or patrol whatsoever, and instead are expected to spend their time training when not actively engaging a threat. They help guard Fjell’Byr, stationed around the camp as a line of defense. They will also guard the camp’s Brygg, the cave meant to punish Fjell with imprisonment.
When the scouts or another member of the faction reports a danger to Fjell’Byr, the champions are expected to send out a patrol to address the danger. They are not expected to flee from this fight, unless it becomes a dire situation in which their lives are in peril. To run from a fight as a Champion is seen as shameful, and depending on the circumstances can result in severe punishment, as far as demotion from the Champion faction.
The champion faction is highly selective: out of all three factions, training to become a Champion takes the longest due to how rigorous training is in regards to physical exertion. It’s not uncommon whatsoever for Rook champions to drop out and train within another faction.
When it comes to enforcement of laws or decisions made within Fjell’Byr, the champions are expected to carry out enforcement of these things. The Val’Kuum is expected to instruct the Champions for the most serious grievances, while the Head Champion and the Circle can instruct more minor grievances. If they witness an infraction to Fjell’Byr’s laws, they are expected to report this to the Circle. When a punishment is decided, it is expected that the Champions administer the punishment.
Refusing to follow the orders of your Head Champion or Val’Kuum is severely frowned upon, punished promptly, and can easily result in demotion from the faction.
Champion responsibilities to the Byr:
1. The Champions must protect Fjell’Byr above all else, and are expected to answer the call to fight whenever the need arises. They cannot flee the fight, unless there is certain peril.
2. When the need arises, the Champions will enforce Fjell’Byr’s laws and punishments.
3. When not addressing a conflict, guarding, or serving out enforcement of Fjell’Byr’s laws, Champions are expected to partake in battle training throughout the day.
SCOUTS - The third faction in Fjell’Byr, scouts are responsible for hunting and scouting the territories around the Byr for danger. Since Fjell’Byr does not have formal borders, the scout faction will send daily patrols to be on the lookout for danger.
Out of the entire faction, the scouts are expected to both hunt to feed the entire Byr, and distribute the prey collected. Rations are delivered twice a day to the Fjells’ nests: a Fjell will receive one piece of prey once in the morning, and once in the evening. Failing to hunt or patrol for the day, or distribute prey, can result in swift punishment within the scout faction.
When danger is discovered, scouts are heavily discouraged from engaging the danger, and are instead expected to report to the Champions first. Only when the battle grows dire for Champions will the scouts also be expected to fight alongside them. The battle training for a scout is different from a Champion: scouts only learn the basics, to be able to hold their own long enough to escape a battle to report it.
Scouts who decide to address a danger on their own rather than consult their Byr are socially frowned upon, and depending on the circumstances, punished for this decision.
Scout responsibilities to the Byr:
1. Scouts are responsible for patrolling and hunting daily for the Byr, and are expected to be able to provide the daily rations
2. Patrols to search for danger must be sent out daily: any danger is expected to be reported to the Champions, rather than addressed by the scouts
3. When necessary, provide backup fighting support for the Champions
OTHER RANKS:
THE TRAVELERS/FACTIONLESS (The Far’maor/Far’maor’byr) - This rank is inclusive of all felines within Fjell’Byr who do not hold a position in any faction, but still live within the Byr. By default, if one born in Fjell’Byr does not choose a faction to train with after they are no longer a fledgling, they are considered Far’maor’byr.
Those who are passing through as travelers, and do not consider themselves formally as a part of Fjell’Byr, are called simply Far’maor.
Only Far’maor/Far’maor’byr who choose to nest within Fjell’Byr’s camp will receive rations.
While not formally within a faction, Far’maor’byr can still and are expected to contribute to the Byr. They can assist the scouts in patrolling or delivering rations, as well as can be called upon by any of the factions to assist as necessary. Depending on the request, Far’maor’byr are expected to heed the call for assistance. Depending on the circumstances, denying aid to a faction can be a punishable offense.
Far’maor’byr responsibilities to the Byr:
1. Follow the laws of Fjell’Byr
2. Assist in responsibilities or tasks asked of them by the factions
ROOKS - Rooks are members of the Byr who, beginning at eight moons, may choose a Faction to train with. It is up to the faction whether they accept this Fjell as a Rook: the entire faction will deliberate, and if the faction’s leader agrees, a ceremony is held to recognize the Fjell as a rook. The Disciple and Scout faction are welcoming to all, but the Champions are far more selective. To signify their decision to train, they are given the title “Rook”.
Training to become a Scout or Disciple typically takes at least six moons. Training to become a Champion takes longer, with an expectation to be in training for at least eight to ten moons. No rook may become a full fledged member of their faction until they are at least twelve moons old, and are old enough to handle the responsibility themselves. When this time comes, the faction’s leader will recognize them as a full member, and may bestow a new name to recognize this commitment. Whether or not one takes on a new name is necessary is decided by the faction’s leader.
While training, a rook will not be assigned to a particular Fjell to learn the ways of their faction: their training is collectively handled by the entire faction. Sometimes rooks will form into classes to practice their faction’s responsibilities, or they will study with full members of their faction. The Head of the faction will sometimes direct rooks to accompany other members of the faction when fulfilling a responsibility.
MIM’SA / MIM’JA - Sometimes during training, a rook and faction member will recognize that they work well with one another, and wish to work together to continue the rook’s training. The faction member and rook can take a personal oath to one another to become Mim’sa and Mim’ja. The Mim’sa is the rook who dedicates themselves to learn from their Mim’ja, the faction member mentoring them.
FLEDGLINGS - The youngest of Fjell’Byr are called “fledglings”. They are the Byr’s kits. A Fjell is considered a fledgling until they turn eight moons old. To recognize one as a Fledgling, the suffix “‘ling” is added to the end of a Fledgling’s name.
Fledglings are not allowed to leave Fjell’Byr’s camp, as the mountains are thought to be too dangerous to traverse at such a young age.
The fledglings are cared for by both their parents and family, as well as Fjell’Byr’s broodies.
BROODIES - Broodies are not considered a formal faction, but rather, the group of Fjell who choose to serve Fjell’Byr by dedicating their lives to the care of Fjell’Byr’s fledglings. They will never leave the fledglings without supervision, and ensure an enriching, engaging kithood for every fledgling with care, play, and particular attention to the kit. Some broodies will choose to take special herbs, to ensure that a milk supply is always available for fledglings.
When it comes to assisting Disciples in kitting or fledgling wellness checks, broodies are the best Fjell for the job. It’s not uncommon for a Disciple to request the aid of a Broody before requesting the help of a Far’maor’byr.
Broodies are highly respected universally across Fjell’Byr: to dedicate one’s life to the future of Fjell’Byr is considered honorable, and referred to with respect.
Failing to guarantee the safety of a fledgling through indirect or purposeful neglectful actions can result in severe punishment, as far as banning a Fjell from ever serving as a broody again.
Broody Responsibilities to the Byr:
1. Care and tend to every fledgling of the Byr with constant supervision and enrichment
2. Provide support to the rearing and development of a fledgling as needed
STORYTELLERS (The Skald’Ga) - When a Fjell becomes unable to serve Fjell’Byr, and wishes to retire, they will join the Byr’s Skald’Ga, or storytellers. They are heavily respected and revered as the keepers of the Byr’s history, passing on story after story orally.
Because of their vast expanse of knowledge, sometimes the Monarch, Heir, or Herbalist will consult the Skald’Ga for their wisdom and insight to a situation. Their opinions on a subject are regarded with respect and reverence.
Storyteller Responsibilities to the Byr:
1. Share and pass on the stories of Fjell’Byr, so that its history is not forgotten.

NAMING CONVENTIONS:
Fjell’Byr follows a naming convention that follows a Fjell throughout their life and time as part of the Byr.
Those who are born as fledglings to Fjell parents are typically given a name inspired by their surroundings, their fledgling’s appearance, or whatever personal reason the parent sees fit. Example of these names are words such as Owl, Branch, Pine, Jagged, Dark, etc. The suffix “‘ling” is then added to the kit’s name, and will be dropped once the kit turns eight moons old. To use an example, a fledgling given the name Sparrow would be called “Sparrow’ling” until the Fjell turns eight moons old.
Once a Fjell turns eight moons old, they drop the “‘ling” suffix from their name, and go by the name their parents gave them. Using the same previous example, when Sparrow’ling turns eight moons old, this Fjell will be simply known as Sparrow.
When a Fjell decides to begin training for a faction, they will take on the title “Rook” to signify this commitment. As long as they train, they will keep this title. Using the previous example, a Fjell named Sparrow who decides to begin faction training would be referred to as “Rook Sparrow” formally.
When a faction is recognized as a full member, their faction’s leader will give them a new name that recognizes their best skills. For example, if Rook Sparrow trained to be a Disciple, and has particular affinity for herbs, their Herbalist may choose to name them “Sparrow Berry”, or “Sparrow Leaf”, or “Sparrow’s Sight”, for their eye for herbs. Sometimes, the faction’s leader may choose to name the Fjell after their personality. The example rook may be named “Sparrow’s Heart” after their courage, or “Sparrow’s Roar” after their bold personality. Whether or not a rook’s name will change to become a full member of the faction is traditional, but will ultimately depend on each faction’s leader if decided as necessary to reflect the choice of the new life.
When a cat earns a title to reflect authority, such as any of the heads of the factions, or the Herbalist, Heir, and Herbalist, only cats higher in authority may refer to them simply as their name, traditionally speaking. Otherwise, Fjell are expected to refer to these felines with their titles always. For example, The Monarch will always be referred to by any Fjell as “Val’Kuum [their name]”, i.e. “Val’Kuum Jagged”.
Names are very important in Fjell’Byr: if a fledgling is given a cruel name, one of the fledgling’s parents, or any delegate of the Council, may request a petition of the Circle to change the fledgling’s name.
Outsiders who become factionless, or the Far’maor or Far’maor’byr, will never be required to change their original name that they joined Fjell’Byr with: the name is considered a part of them, and they don’t have to change it if they don’t wish to.

Camp - A cave system along the rockface. The main caves have outside access, with a gentle sloping ridge/outcropping path to connect them all. They also are connected via internal tunnels and pathways, allowing access even when the weather outside is harsh. Certain caves have internal access only, tucked behind other main caves for protection and privacy.
The Disciples' Cave - At the highest point of the external path is the Disciples' cave. This cave has the most natural life within it, as a crevice in the ceiling allows a small spout of water from the waterfall outside to pour into a deep spring. Live moss and lichen grows along the wall, and will even bloom during the summer, when the sun shines in upon it. Crystals, small bones, and dried herbs hang from the ceilings. The den always smells of moss and herbs, with a slight mineral tang due to the spring. Hollows in the walls are used to store herbs and nest materials. A small cave system is attached to the main cavern, each of the caves used for various healing. One is for cats who have illnesses that may spread, so they may be kept apart from the rest of the Byr and cared for by the Disciples. Another is for injuries that require longer care--allowing for privacy and separation from cats who may be ill. The other caves offer more space for whatever is needed: private space for discussions, physical therapy, assessments, or overflow if one of the long-term care caves gets full. The Disciples themselves sleep in a cave near the front of the main cavern--one that is small but kept warm by comfortable nests and body heat. The Herbalist may choose to sleep here with their Disciples, or in a small cave next to the spring. The small cave next to the spring is often used for dream interpretation, as the naturally occurring crystals here are believed to help connect the Herbalist to their ancestors. If cats are too injured to make it to the top of the path with ease, they will be treated in the Champions' Cave until they can either be carried up to the Disciples' Cave, or walk themselves.
The Broodies' Cave - A small, warm cavern tucked behind the Storyteller's cave, it has no outer access. This is in order to keep the Fledgelings and Broodies safe from potential threats, as well as keeping Fledgelings from sneaking out. The floor is lined with moss and animal pelts to help keep it warm and soft for the Fledgelings. To help with lighting, some glowing lichen grows along the walls, and some bioluminescent fungus hangs from the ceiling. Beautiful crystals hang nearby, which creates a lovely reflection upon the ceiling, providing for storytelling and entertainment. The Broodies and Fledgelings use the stream just outside the entrance for their source of water, and often will spend time in the Storytellers' cave, the Storytellers loving to share their adventures and tales with the little ones.
The Landing - This is the open space outside the Camp's cave system. The waterfall next to the camp pools into a large pond/spring next to the Landing. This is where cats will sun and mingle when the weather is good, and often where patrols are organized, since these require both Scouts and Champions to communicate and participate. It is also where stargazing frequently happens, and where ceremonies and festivals are held due to the openness being believed to connect the Byr to their ancestors.
General Territory - The main territory of the Fjell, this area consists of a few distinct landmarks, as well as general mountainous terrain.
Training Grounds - A rocky outcropping near the camp, this area is frequently used for training of the newest Rooks. It is a good place to toughen up their paws and safely practice climbing rock faces due to the massive boulders here. It is also a good place to spar, and practice stalking methods at, since the terrain mimics the rough terrain of the mountains.
The Waterfall - A large waterfall which cascades down the mountain face into a large pond/spring next to the Fjell'byr camp. There are a few pools in outcroppings along the way down, where plant life thrives. These outcroppings provide a fairly decent path from the base of the waterfall to the top, and also serve as the Disciples' herb gardens. At the top of the waterfall is an overhang, from which a clear view of much of the Fjell'byr's territory can be appreciated on a nice day. A Champion is almost always stationed up here to keep watch over the Byr below.
The Starlit Crest - The spiritual center for the Fjell'byr, this peak is the highest in the mountains and thus the closest to the stars. The La'kuum, Hil'kuum, and Val'kuum will go here to speak with Stjar'keld, and some important ceremonies are held here. Rooks are made full Disciples here, the next La'kuum is chosen here, the Hil'kuum is presented to Stjar'keld for acceptance here, and the Val'kuum receives their gifts of leadership here. When Disciples, the La'kuum, the Hil'kuum, or the Val'kuum are accepted by Stjar'keld, the sky will light up with a brilliant aurora, painting the peaks in a multitude of colors. Flowers bloom here in the spring and summer, but strangely, the flowers that bloom are never the same as the previous season...
The Sunken Cavern - A mostly-unexplored cave system, these caverns are accessible mainly by an ominous entrance beneath the Snowpass Steps and the Starlit Crest. The entrance to this cave system is called the Gaping Maw due to the teeth-like stalactites and stalagmites reaching from the ceiling and the floor. There are a few caves already discovered by the Fjell, but there remain many more to explore...
Hot Springs - A short distance away from camp, these springs are used by many in the Fjell, especially in the coldest moons. They are frequently used by the Disciples for physical therapy or treatment for sore muscles. The Storytellers often relax by or in the springs to soothe the ache their age has brought them. In the coldest moons, this often becomes a spot for the training of Rooks, as the hot steam keeps the nearby areas warm.

After the leaders of the four clans made their announcement, four newcomers appeared behind them, claiming they were from a far-distant group in the mountains called the Fjell’byr. In the patrol were Val’kuum Jagged, La’kuum Night Shade, Bers’kuum Swallow’s Whisker, and Olv’kuum Bear’s Heart.
The monarch, Val’kuum Jagged, announced they were looking for their Byr’s next Kil’kuum or Heir – their version of a deputy – and were sent to the lake by their Stjar’keld. Val’kuum Jagged claimed the meteor witnessed by the territory was an omen from their ancestors that the next heir to the group would be among the Clan cats. The Herbalist, La’kuum Night Shade, also presented the notion that they were looking for a second cat: a massive, pure white spirit with glowing eyes. Quillstar informed them the second cat they sought was Minerva.
As the La’kuum continued, she announced the heir they sought had a bright ginger mane whose pelt matched the bravery that shone in their heart. At this moment, the Herbalist looked at Willowchomp and declared her to be the heir they sought. This was momentarily confirmed by the Head Scout, Olv’kuum Bear’s Heart. The patrol believed their search had finally, after countless moons, ended.
Val’kuum Jagged requested her patrol and high ranks be given permission to reside at the Gathering Place for the next quarter moon as they search for Minerva and commune with Willowchomp. She was given permission, and StreamClan, WoodClan, and RockClan stationed patrols to keep the visitors under watchful eyes. Larkspirit, Slateshadow, Bouncewind, and Flamespirit served the RockClan patrol. Pumpkinlight, Ravenscar, Doefrost, and Lionfrost served the WoodClan patrol. Cloudwhisper, Hailheart, Hollypoppy, and Pebblestream served the StreamClan patrol.

La’kuum Night Shade, Willowchomp, and Bers’kuum Swallow’s Whisker traveled to find Minerva to pose an important question: was Willowchomp the cat they sought? Minerva’s ability to call upon deceased cats was used to summon Rook Blackbird, a Cloudwalker of the Stjar’keld, to answer their question. It was revealed by Rook Blackbird that Willowchomp did not share the sacred Hil’kuum’s bond that links them to the Val’kuum.
They had not yet truly found their missing Heir, and so the Fjell’byr’s search continued.

The Fjell’byr patrol traveled around the lake to each of the clan’s territories to deliver the news they had not yet found their Heir. In their message to the encountered clan patrols, they urged them to share the following omen they received in hopes the message resonated with any cats:
A massive tree rooted at the peak of mountains, the sun rising behind the ancient branches. As the sun's rays swallow the tree, the tree alights in a burst of flames. But it does not consume the tree…
The Fjell’byr informed the patrols that would remain at the Gathering Place until they discovered their new heir. During this time, they welcomed to answer any questions the Clan cats may have of them, and their way of life in the Fjell’byr.
Following this news, Singesight of StreamClan, Bluebriar of StreamClan, Thunderstrike of StreamClan, Lionpaw of RockClan, Pebblestream of StreamClan, Goldenpaw of WoodClan, and Crescentpaw of WoodClan, came forward to see if they were the Heir the Fjell sought so desperately for.

Pelicansun, Healer of StreamClan, brought forth Singesight, warrior of StreamClan, to Val’kuum Jagged and La’kuum Night Shade, believing in ernest the Fjell’byr prophecy was about her. Upon meeting Singesight, the Val’kuum felt a strange presence and connection to the StreamClan warrior.
As Singesight revealed how they related to the prophecy, it all started to come together. Singesight was born of flame, the daughter of Firestar and Flameflash. Her roots, her family tree, ran deep, ran ancient. When the La’Kuum asked Singesight if she felt a connection to the Val’kuum, Singesight confirmed the pulling, otherworldly sensation. The Val’kuum voiced, she, too, felt the ancient, special connection only shared by a Val’kuum and Hil’kuum.
Singesight was the Fjell’byrs long-sought Heir. The Fjell’s search had finally, finally come to an end after countless interviews and mishaps.
Pelicansun was asked to join the Fjell’byr as a Disciple, by request of La’kuum Night Shade, to which they also agreed. Pelicansun and Singesight would be moving to the Fjell’byr to create a new life with new ranks. The Fjell high ranks extended the invitation to join the Fjell to anyone who wished to create a new life for themselves in the mountains.

The Fjell’Byr patrol have located their heir: a StreamClan warrior named Singesight. Upon discovery of their heir, they begin to return to the mountains. They invite any Clan cat who wishes to join them to come along, as it is their custom to never deny when a feline feels the call of the mountains.
Goldenpaw and Crescentlily returned to WoodClan to inform the Clan of this news, communicating both the Fjells’ open invitation, as well as their pledge to join the Fjell’Byr patrol back to the mountains.
Stonepaw returned to ValleyClan after just paying the newcomers a curious visit, gossiping about the Fjells’ open invitation to join their patrol back into the mountains, to live in Fjell’Byr. The gray and white tabby apprentice chattered on idly, with no intention of joining this patrol on this endeavor.
Lionpaw returned from visiting the Fjell patrol, and word quickly spread throughout the rest of the Clan of how she heard of their open invitation into the mountains. Rumors quickly turned to the talk of the camp, discussing what this could mean.
Pebblestream was the first to start rumors of the Fjells continued search for their heir among the lake cats: Thunkderstrike approaches the Fjell, only to find he is not the heir. Bluebriar too feels the mountains calling, but not to be Fjell’Byr’s heir. Word spreads that Bluebriar has pledged to travel with the Fjell’s patrol back to Fjell’Byr.

From StreamClan, Bluebriar, Pebblestream, Pelicansun, Singesight, Thawpatch, Thunderstrike, Tidesoul, and Winterhawk have left to seek out a new life.
Minerva has also left the lake for the mountains.
They must first seek out the Ancient Fig tree, to mark the way to the Mountain Path.
01/19/2022: The Fjell patrol made it to the ancient fig tree. The massive Fjell felines discerned where The Mountain Path lay from years of living within the mountains. Thank StarClan they are there: no lake cat could have ever found this path. They begin to head up The Mountain Path, which will lead to The Mountain Spring.
01/24/2022: The Fjell patrol arrived to the Mountain Spring, taking a few suns to rest and prepare for the hardest part of the journey:
Traveling the Gorge Pathway, to reach Fjell’Byr.
01/27/2022: The Fjell patrol departed from the Mountain Spring, to begin traversing the Gorge Pathway, the last, but longest and hardest, part of their journey to Fjell’Byr.
Only two cats can walk side by side comfortably along this winding, upwards path into the mountains. Just beyond the ledge of this pathway is a plummet to certain death. Along the mountainside, there are small pockets of caves that allow for the patrol to rest for the night.
The entire patrol must keep their eyes out and be aware: desperate predators stalk this pathway.

11/16/2022: Soft chatters of excitement course through the rocky, cavernous camp as cats gather by the entrance. Your long-departed Disciple, Belladonna’s Bite has returned home. Close behind her are ValleyClan healer, Clouddancer, and Stonehawk, a ValleyClan warrior. They announced to only be staying temporarily, wishing to speak to Minerva to discuss important matters regarding the clans of the lake.
With more trepidation, and a little further behind, the faces some former clan cats may remember: Butterflywish, Spiderbite, and Roachmask. Huddled closer to the trio of mollies are three younger felines, whose names were not immediately revealed.
However, one cat seems to be missing from the return party: Rook Shallow. It was revealed by Belladonna’s Bite the tom decided to remain at the lake, returning to his home in RockClan.

12/1/2022 (Season change): Leaf-bare begins
12/29/2022: A murmur of goodbyes rings through the cavernous, open camp as you bid farewell to Stonehawk and Clouddancer. The two ValleyClan toms will be embarking on their mission back to the lakes, guided by a small patrol of byr’mates to the base of the mountain to ensure safety as the snow starts to stick.
Additionally, you bid one more farewell you were not expecting. Minerva The Oracle has announced she, too, will be returning to the lake with the clan cats after spending the last countless moons in the Fjell'byr. Her aid to the Fjell'byr has been very appreciated, and she will be dearly missed. She revealed she has important matters to take care of, and her return to the Fjell in the future is unknown.
This will be the last of any arrivals and departures until the season warms and the heavy snow subsides. Any requests to travel between the mountains and the lake will be politely declined until it is safe to do so.

The Fjell’byr was hit by a sudden avalanche, blocking both the entrance and exit of the camp, along with a sizeable number of cavernous dens. Part of the Disciples den was covered with snow, which swiftly had to be excavated to treat the wounded. The avalanche spared no cat enough time to reach safety, thus resulting in a plethora of injuries with varying degrees of severity.
The Disciples and the La’Kuum worked tirelessly to treat and aid all the injuries they could.
