Ghost Characters
Ghost characters are a unique, special playable character type in Rise of the Clans: they are active, undead spirits that haunt the territories the Clans call their home. Ghosts follow the character creation guide the same as all other character types, in addition to the guide below.
GHOST CHARACTER SLOT: To obtain an active ghost character, a roleplayer is required to first purchase the “GHOST CHARACTER SLOT” from the official discord shop. For prices and more info on how to obtain this, please visit the shop.
GHOST CHARACTER ELIGIBILITY: All active characters and NPCs who have a canon death event in the groupwide plot, as well as deceased NPCs, are all eligible to become ghosts. It is possible for a StarClan, Dark Forest, or otherwise undead cat to become a ghost in the waking world, but once they do, they will be unable to return to the afterlife they once inhabited, at any point and time. It is also possible to create new characters who did not die via an in RP death event. These characters may be from the Clans, Fjell'Byr, or a rogue/loner/kittypet without any additional purchases. They may not have been a high rank in life, however, i.e. Fjell'Byr's heir, ValleyClan's healer, the leader of a group of rogues, etc. Only active high ranks who have had a canon in RP death event are eligible to become ghosts.
GHOST CHARACTER HISTORY
DEATH EVENT: As previously mentioned, ghost characters must have their death event defined and explained. How did they die, where, and at what point in the canon plot timeline? All of this must be thoroughly explained in your character's written application. A ghost character's history and death event must not conflict with the canon plot timeline.
PAST LIFE MEMORIES: When a ghost returns, they will NOT remember all of their past life’s memories. It is required that some parts are forgotten: you, the roleplayer, get to decide which life memories are kept and which ones are lost. It is possible for a ghost to have no recollection whatsoever of their past life: in cases like this, the only thing they will still remember is their name. While it is possible that other characters may tell them of these past life memories that they cannot recall, the ghost will have to entirely trust that the character is telling them the truth. It is impossible for a ghost to recollect the memory itself, for themselves: they will only be able to hear the secondhand accounts from other characters, if said character has the knowledge of said events happening.
GHOST CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS
Ghosts may only enter formal, appropriate relationships with other ghosts. They are unable to have kits whatsoever.
GHOST “HAUNTING GROUNDS”
All ghosts are “tied” to a specific area that they exclusively haunt, and can be thought of as their “permanent residence”. They cannot roam farther than their haunting grounds. The following haunting grounds are as follows:
Clan Haunting Grounds: A ghost will have access to the entire Clan they haunt, as well as all of the Clan’s borders.
Non-Clan Haunting Grounds: A ghost will have access to all the non-Clan areas, as well as Clan border channels.
Fjell’Byr Haunting Grounds: A ghost will have access to all of Fjell’Byr to haunt.
Once a haunting ground is chosen, the ghost is permanently tied to their haunting grounds, and cannot “switch” or “leave”. It does not necessarily matter what the character and group's rank was in life when choosing a haunting ground. For example, a kittypet may inconceivably manifest in RockClan's territory. Or, a Fjell'Byr feline could haunt the twoleg trailer park despite having lived their entire lives in Fjell'Byr. There is no rhyme nor reason to the process, just the same of how some spirits come to be ghosts, while others remain in their realm's afterlife. It is entirely up to the roleplayer in what they wish to choose.
GHOST DESIGN RULES
TRANSPARENCY: Ghosts will never be fully opaque: they must always have some transparency to them, and are see-through by the living. For digital art programs, ghost characters must be at approximately ~90% opacity or lower.
EYE COLOR: Upon becoming a ghost, your character’s eyes will “blank out”: they will either be pure black or white, with no pupils/iris/sclera.
MANIFESTATION: When ghosts appear in the waking world, they are never able to be fully “present” physically: as a result, they will have “bits” of their appearance “peel off” or “dissolve” off their body. Their appearance can be easily distorted by their own movement, or objects passing through them.
DESIGN AND COLOR PALETTE: Upon dying, your character’s design and appearance will not drastically change: for example, a white cat would not suddenly become an orange tabby as a ghost. Their pelt colors, however, can become very desaturated during this process: your character’s pelt colors may be “washed” or “grayed out” upon turning into a ghost.
Below is an example ghost design, following the rules above!
GHOST MECHANICS
Ghosts when they first enter the waking world will appear in the daytime. This is the only time that they can appear during the day. Otherwise, ghosts can only physically manifest visually at night, from dusk, til dawn: there can be no sunlight present for them to appear visually.
When they are able to visually manifest, they can appear and disappear at will.
Despite being unable to appear during the day, ghosts can still talk to and interact with the living at any point and time. They can speak, and when talking will seem to be a disembodied voice coming from nowhere. Doing this takes a large energy toll on the ghost when it is not night time, and does not happen often. At most, they will be able to express a few phrases, before having to rest.
PHYSICAL INTERACTIONS: ghosts cannot physically interact in any way with the living: any attempt to touch a ghost will cause the paw to phase through their figure, and vice versa. As a result, they are incapable of causing any form of physical harm to any living creature. They can also phase through all physical objects: no walls can keep out a ghost.
DREAM INTERACTIONS: ghosts can enter any cat’s dream at will, to interact with the living. In this dream realm, ghosts can cause physical harm to the living one sleeping, from within the dream itself. If the dreaming cat wakes up, however, the ghost is cast out and no harm will come to the afflicted. A dreaming cat afflicted by a ghost is able to wake up at any time, just like anyone can wake up from a nightmare.
AGING: Ghosts do not age whatsoever, and will remain the permanent age they start at first manifestation. As a result, age related mechanics (i.e. age ups, rank ups, etc.) are not considered for ghosts: only IRL time is considered (i.e. you still must wait four IRL months after your ghost character’s join date before they are eligible for NPC’ing.).
GHOST NPC’ing
Ghosts cannot be “killed off” like an active character to remove them from the character slot. They can, however, be NPC’d with the same process to NPC any active character. Please read here to learn the process to NPC an active character!
