CHARACTER'S GROUP & RANK
All characters are considered to be part of a feline population in Rise of the Clans. Depending on the population, or group, they belong to, they will have a specific rank that grants them certain In-Character abilities, permissions, responsibilities, and more. Every group has its own unique rules, beliefs, lifestyles, regional location, and more. To learn more about the feline populations of Rise of the Clans, please click here!
Clan and Fjell Characters
Clan and Fjell characters do not require a purchase whatsoever to create: you will always be free to create characters of these type!
Characters Outside of the Clans
All Non-Clan characters not residing within Fjell'Byr (i.e. rogues, loners, kittypets) require a purchase from the discord’s shop prior to submitting them to the group. Please visit the discord shop for more info regarding pricing and starting options! As a result, your first character in this roleplay cannot be a Non-Clan cat.
Non-Clan Permanent Residency: Depending on your Non-Clan cat’s rank, your Non-Clan cat will start off within a specific region or twolegplace among the outside territories. Changes in permanent residency can be made through purchases in the discord’s shop. For pricing and options, please visit the discord shop for more info!
First Characters
All first characters (i.e. the very first character a new member brings in to the group's canon, and fills their first character slot) are restricted from applying shop purchases. This is due to the fact that members cannot earn official group currency until accepted as an official member.
» While we don't allow members to earn points prior to joining, we do have a "loaning" system. This system allows for incoming members to take out a "loan" of up to 300 points from the moderator team, to apply purchases to their very first character. By doing so, the member agrees to fulfill the balance within 90 days of approval. If the member does not fulfill this balance in time, the character will be entirely retconned from the roleplay until the balance is fulfilled.
» Some purchases may be retroactively applied to first characters that do not require retconning the character’s current established history, such as size limitations. Reach out to the mod team to learn more regarding this!
First Character's Group
The Clans of the Lake or Fjell'Byr feline populations are the only groups available to join for first characters. Character creation for any other groups in Rise of the Clans require a shop purchase. As a result, all other groups are unavailable to join for first characters. From your second character slot onwards, you may have your character join any group, provided the appropriate shop purchases are made prior, as necessary.
Creating NPCs for your Character’s History
As necessary, you are allowed to create NPCs to fill gaps for your active character’s canon pre-RP history and lore. Please keep in mind that while we allow NPCs to be named in a character's history for submission, until an official NPC sheet is created for the named NPC, they will not be considered canon beyond your character's personal history. You will be unable to reference or draw them in canon media post-character approval and canonization into the group, until their NPC sheet is submitted to the group. For a guide on NPC creation, please see here!
Naming your Character
Clan Cat Naming Conventions
Currently, all Clan characters must have names that follow the traditional warrior naming scheme. This group accepts both prefixes/suffixes canon to the official warriors series, as well as non-canon prefixes/suffixes. To find a running list of all approved prefixes for the group thus far, please click here! Nearly every single prefix/suffix canon to the official warrior cats series will be accepted as a traditional warrior name, with the exception of daylight warriors/former kittypet prefixes. Although prefixes/suffixes do not have to be canon to the series, they must be realistic. Metal, acid, house, etc. would not be accepted prefixes, nor would joke names such as mountaindew, etc. Non-canon prefixes that relate to fauna native to North America or their territory/surrounding area descriptions are more likely to be accepted. We encourage you to reach out to the mod team to discuss any non-canon prefixes/suffixes prior to submission, as we handle each request on a case-by-case basis. The best way to do this is via our #character_preapproval channel in the group Discord.
Banned prefixes: Using one of the Clan's names as a prefix is banned. Warriors may choose to take on Clan name suffixes as a way to honor their own Clan and show their dedication, however. Star- as a prefix is banned, as well.
» Only one prefix at a time is allowed per Clan. Rare, in character exceptions this rule, however, can be approved by the moderator team. Check the Clan Rosters and Reserved Prefixes before applying to ensure the prefix you have in mind is available. If you have a special circumstance that would cause your cat to have a duplicate name, please reach out to the mod team via noting the group, or opening a ticket in our discord. Examples of special circumstances include but are not limited to:
‣ being named after a leader
‣ being named after a parent/grandparent
‣ changing a name to be named for a mentor/family member/etc.
‣ switching Clans, resulting in duplicate prefixes
If you are unsure if your circumstance falls under one of these categories, please reach out to the moderator team and we will review your request. Please note, we very rarely allow for duplicate prefixes, and these are handled on a case by case basis, so please have a backup name you are happy with just in case.
» Please note, we do not always update our records as promptly as things are submitted. If you would like to double check that your prefix is available, feel free to note the group or ask in #character_preapproval in the OOC Discord.
Non-traditional Clan names: Non-traditional warrior cat names are allowed for Clan characters via purchases in our discord server’s shop: characters who have either Rogue Past or Kittypet Origins limitation purchased may have a non-traditional prefix/suffix! Purchase of these limitations for your character at Rise of the Clan's Shop is required before character submission. Nearly any non-traditional name would most likely be accepted, with the understanding that your cat may not understand what their name means in definition. A former kittypet named Volvo, for example, would most likely not understand that this is a specific brand of “car” (let alone know what a “brand” is in this context), but rather, this is what their previous owners called them.
» Non-traditional prefixes can also be given by Clan cats with the “Kittypet origins” or “Rogue past” purchase, through another purchase in the official OOC discord’s shop. Please visit the shop to learn more about pricing and rules regarding this!
Non-Clan Cat Naming Conventions
Non-Clan cats do not have to follow Clan cat, or any, naming conventions whatsoever, and have a lot more flexibility regarding their name. Non-Clan cats may have more “human-oriented” words for names such as Acid, Metal, Socks, Donovan, Beatrice, etc. Although your Non-Clan cat may call themselves one of these more “human” terms, they most likely do not know what it means beyond it being the name that they’re called, and if it’s regarded with negative or positive connotations among Twolegs. Going back to the previous example, a Non-Clan cat most likely wouldn’t be able to explain what “acid” is to another cat, but would know it as their name, and that Twolegs do not seem to regard the name positively.
» Although Non-Clan cats have much more flexibility in naming conventions, our no joke name rule and zero-tolerance policy for bigotry still applies.
» No duplicate names among Non-Clan cats. Please be sure to check the group’s Allegiances to ensure the name you have in mind isn’t already in use!
Fjell’Byr Naming Conventions
Fjell’Byr follows a specific, unique system for naming their own Fjell: a full explanation of this system can be found here!
» Like Clan cat names, Fjell’Byr names are restricted to what IC common knowledge the Fjell would have regarding the world around them. Names such as Metal, Acid, House, etc. would not be accepted as a Fjell prefix/suffix.
» Characters with an IC history of joining Fjell’Byr, rather than having been born there and named by Fjell parents, will have the opportunity to either:
Keep their original names if they remain factionless (i.e. Far’maor / Far’maor’byr / Broody / etc.)
Choose a new name for oneself that follows Fjell naming conventions (i.e. A former Clan cat named “Applepelt” could choose to begin going by the name “Apple”, or a completely new name like “Branch” , “Jagged” , “Dawn” , etc.)
Earn a new name, by joining a faction: whether or not it will be required to change one’s name to be recognized as a full member of the faction is dependent on the IC opinion of the faction’s leader at that time. The mod team will defer to and respect whatever the current Fjell’Byr high ranks’ IC opinion of having to change one’s name: as a result, your character’s name may change by joining a faction.
» Unique to Fjell’Byr, sometimes Fjell will name their kits with Fjell’Byr-specific terminology. For example, The Fjell use the term “Oorakki” to refer to foxes. Thus, it is possible for a Fjell character to have the prefix “Oorakki”. To find a full terminology glossary for Fjell’Byr, please see the Fjell’Byr page!
Character’s Appearance
For all visual references of characters: characters must be portrayed in a minimum fullbody side view, with no markings hidden from view (i.e. a "standing up straight" pose). Asymmetrical characters must have a clear fullbody reference of both sides of the design. Please reference the example application linked above to see what would be considered an acceptable pose / view of the design!
Pelt Coloration/Markings/Length/"Hair": To match the canon warrior cats series and their designs as closely as possible, we have the following design rules to follow. Cats must have realistic appearances with pelt colors and markings found naturally across the species: no unnatural colors (i.e. neon green, bright blue, firetruck red, etc.), and no completely unnatural markings such as complex or geometric symbols. Slightly unnatural markings and toned colors are allowed within reason, such as “doberman dog” coloration/markings on a cat, blue/purple toning to gray pelt colors, hearts/diamond shaped markings, etc. but please consult the mod team to be sure beforehand, as designs that delve into this gray area are handled on a case-by-case basis. Characters’ fur length must be within realistic standards: for example, a cat’s cheek fur wouldn’t necessarily be long enough to drag along the floor, but they could have cheek fur that reaches their shoulders. This would also apply to "hair" tufts, the details of which are explained below.
Genetic accuracy: Despite requiring realistic appearances in coloration and markings, we do not require genetic accuracy whatsoever as a reflection of the genetic inaccuracy present to the canon warrior cats series: male fertile calicos are permitted, impossible pelt/offspring colors/makings are permitted, impossible markings are allowed within reason, albinos/chimeras/vitiligo/sun bleaching are allowed without restriction, etc. A lot of creative freedom is granted in this regard!
Cat eye color: Rise of the Clans allows a lot of flexibility with cat eye color: we allow for virtually any shade/hue of color that can naturally occur in cats, regardless of pelt coloration. The only exception to this is pure red eye color: pure red eyes are reserved for pure albinos only. Pink/purple eye colors are permitted, provided they are not too saturated/overpowering in hue and are light in shade. If you’re unsure, please reach out to the moderator team before submitting!
Character scars/scarring: We allow for excessive scarring on characters without purchases needed, provided that the character’s history of how they got the scars does not conflict with the overall groupwide plot's past canon. For example: your character could not have excessive burn wounds due to a StreamClan camp fire, as this has not happened as groupwide canon previously. For more information on character disabilities, please see the “Character Disability” section below!
Common appearance bans: Unlike other character appearance bans found commonly across other roleplay groups, Rise of the Clans doesn’t enforce a lot of character appearance bans: bans such as heterochromia, short/bob tails, overgrown fangs/claws, folded/twisted/floppy ears, fertile male calicos, etc. are allowed without restriction! That being said, however, we do limit a few traits regarding appearance to requiring a purchase prior, such as four ears or split tails, so please be sure to check the official OOC discord shop to be sure of what is and isn't limited!
Breed-specific traits/Purebreeds: Characters are allowed to have mixed lineages to allow for breed-specific traits such as curly fur textures (such as from a devon rex), large ears/build (such as an oriental cats ears/build), etc. without purchase prior and without restriction.
For a cat to be a purebreed, however, requires both request of moderator approval prior to purchasing, then the purchase of both “Kittypet Origins” or “Active Kittypet” and the purebreed cat limitation from the shop. The price will vary depending on the breed requested.
Some breeds have been banned from ever living as a Clan cat, rogue, or Fjell, for roleplay logistic purposes, but are still available via purchase in the official OOC discord shop. Examples of this are any breeds larger than an F4 generation savannah cat, or completely hairless breeds such as sphinxes. Each breed is handled on a case-by-case basis: please reach out to the moderator team directly to learn more!
Accessories: Rise of the Clans allows for accessories to be purchased for characters through our OOC discord server’s shop. Please be sure to read through the #accessories channel in thorough detail: some accessories are restricted based on a character’s Clan, or require other character limitations to be able to be worn. All characters start off able to wear one accessory: purchase of additional accessory slots are required to be able to wear more than one accessory at a time.
Character Height/Size:
Cats: Characters’ heights and sizes are not considered pertinent to roleplay beyond cosmetic effects: as a result, Rise of the Clans allows for a lot of flexibility in cat heights/sizes. Without purchase, cats may be as short as 8 inches tall at the shoulder, and as tall as 14.5 inches as a maximum height. With the purchase of Runt, cats may be as short as 7 inches tall at the shoulder, and with the purchase of Oversized, as tall as 15.5 inches at the shoulder. There are no exceptions otherwise to this! Height and size character limitations may be purchased and applied retroactively to any character after acceptance into the group.
Fjell: The Fjell are naturally a bit larger than their feline counterparts: without purchase, Fjell characters may be as tall as 16 inches at the shoulder, and with the purchase of Oversized, may be 17 inches at the shoulder. Like cats, there are no exceptions otherwise to this, and size-related character limitations may be purchase within the official discord’s shop.
Fjell Anatomy: Different from cats, the Fjell have slightly different anatomy tendencies. For a full anatomy guide, please click here!
"Hair" Tufts/Styles:
To allow for flexibility with others’ art styles, roleplayers are allowed to give their characters “hair” tufts, with the following restrictions:
The “hair’s” length and style cannot grow past the top of a cat’s eyes (regardless of whether or not the hair obscures the eyes), stick out further than the length of their muzzle/nose, and cannot stand up past the tips of their ears.
“Hair” styles may only partially obscure the top of a cat’s eye, to allow for art style flexibility: the cat’s eyes otherwise cannot be halfway, significantly, or completely obscured by their hair.
“Hair” styles cannot be recognizably human: no clean shaped bang cuts, clean-cut shaved mohawks/undercuts, bobs, braids, ponytails, etc.
For a visual guide illustrating the above guidelines, please see here! If you are unsure if your character's fur/hair length is within this limit, please reach out to ask the mod team.
Character's Gender and Sexual Orientation
All lgbtq+ identities are welcome!
Character Disabilities
Important Note: The moderator team enforces a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to depicting any sort of disability in a negative/harmful/stereotypical/ableist manner. Instances of this may result in immediate banning from the group: we encourage every roleplayer to thoroughly research any disabilities prior to implementing them in character roleplay, and to reach out to the moderator team in case anyone would like to check that their depictions are not harmful in nature prior.
Physical Disabilities: All disabilities that are possible for a cat are possible within this roleplay with no restrictions or purchases required. You are required to extensively research the disability/disabilities, so as to ensure that your portrayal is not ableist in nature. If you have questions or wish assistance in this, please do not hesitate to reach out to the mod team!
Mental illness: Although cats may exhibit symptoms of mental illness, you may not directly name any medical terms or related terms to your cat's illnesses (for example, you could not say your cat has PTSD, but you could say that your character experiences distress when exposed to water, which acutely reminds them of how they lost their family). With all this being said, the moderator team again reminds roleplayers that negative depictions of mental illness, despite not being directly medically defined, are considered ableist, and consequences will fall under our zero-tolerance policy consideration.
Character History
Please try to have your character's history more or less align with the groupwide plot’s history! For example, if you wish to join with a StreamClan warrior old enough to experience the exile of StreamClan, their history must reference this event occurring, as this affected every single StreamClan warrior at the time. Every Clan's page contains their in canon history. For a timeline breakdown of the groupwide plot, please click here! For a bullet point breakdown of every prominent plot point, organized by Clan and chronological date, and follows how many moons and seasons have passed since the start date [8/19/2019], please see here for the Clan Update Bulletin archive!
History Subject/Content Matter: While we allow for some mature themes to be present in character histories such as violence, death, abusive family/parent situations, and other sensitive material, this must be properly censored beforehand and must have proper, visible warnings. An easy guideline for what could be allowed is any sort of mature/sensitive subject matter already present within the canon series, as well as our guide to allowed/banned content within the official group rules. As we are a group that allows for minors, some mature themes are flat out not allowed under any circumstances, such as anything remotely sexual/nsfw in nature, or anything that falls under our zero-tolerance policy, such as homophobia, transphobia, ableism, sexual abuse, etc. If you're ever unsure, please contact the moderator team beforehand to make sure your characters’ histories fit within our rules!
Clan Character History
Clan Character Heritage: Any character history that deviates from being born a Clanborn warrior to two same-Clan parents may be subject to moderator approval, and/or requiring purchase from the OOC discord server shop beforehand. Below are some common deviations and character histories available for discussion or approval: if you have additional ideas regarding something not listed here, please reach out to the mod team directly to discuss prior to character submission!
⪼Previous mentors/apprentices: Warriors may list previous NPC mentors and apprentices prior to acceptance into the group: you are also free to establish active character mentor relation retcons once accepted afterwards!
Half-Clan Characters: A “Half-Clan” character is considered any Clanborn character who was either directly born to a single NPC Clan parent, with an NPC non-Clan parent outside the Clans (i.e. a rogue or kittypet), or a Clan warrior born outside the Clans to said NPC non-Clan parent, and then brought to live within the Clans and Clanborn parent at such a young age, they do not remember being originally born outside of the Clan territories whatsoever. Their earliest memories are Clan life. This type of plot is allowed within character’s histories without needing a shop purchase or moderator approval prior.
Cross-Clan Relationship Heritage: Characters born as a result of a cross-Clan relationship between two NPC characters are restricted based on overall roleplay population: if you would like a character born under these circumstances, please reach out to the moderator team via ticket to seek approval prior!
Characters born as a result of a cross-Clan relationship between an active character and an NPC character, or as a result of two active characters, requires the purchase of either the “Forbidden relationship with an NPC” or “Forbidden Relationship” character limitations respectively, from the parent active character(s) prior to being accepted.
Former Rogues/Kittypets: Characters born outside of the Clans originally living as either a rogue or a kittypet require the purchase of “Rogue Past” or “Kittypet Origins” character limitations respectively, from the discord server’s shop, prior to acceptance. If the character lived long enough in this former life stage to be able to recall doing so, this character’s history will require this shop purchase.
Clan Changes in History: Clan changes in character histories are restricted: this requires both moderator approval prior, and purchase of the “Clan Change” character limitation from the OOC discord server’s shop. Character histories are restricted to allowing just one Clan change purchase in total.
Clan cat IC common knowledge on Fjell’Byr: As it currently stands in the groupwide plot, the only IC common knowledge Clan cats have regarding Fjell’Byr ways of life can be found in the following two documents:
Non-Clan Character History
Non-Clan Character Heritage: Non-Clan characters may start off with either having been born outside of the Clans, or born as a non-high rank (i.e. warrior, apprentice, kit, permanent nursery cat, elder, etc.) Clan cat who then left the Clans. Non-Clan cats born outside of the Clans know of the Clans and their existence, and that they have borders they are willing to protect, but otherwise will not know much more about the Clans’ specific ways of living. Non-Clan cats who were previously Clan cats will have much more knowledge on the subject and specifics, having previously lived the life of a warrior. Character histories in which a character was previously a high rank (healer, healer apprentice, deputy, leader) are limited in availability, and require discussion and approval with the moderator team before submission. Please reach out to discuss further!
Fjell’Byr Character History
Like any other character type, please try to have your Fjell character’s history more or less match up with the Fjell’Byr general lore!
Fjell’Byr Character Heritage: Fjell-born characters with two Fjell parents can be brought in without a shop purchase or moderator approval prior required whatsoever. Characters/character's parents may have a history of coming from outside of Fjell'Byr without moderator approval, i.e. a former kittypet, rogue, or Clan cat, with the exception of characters who were high ranks in the Clans. Please open a ticket if you want to explore the possibility of a former Clan cat with a high rank as history for your Fjell'Byr character/Fjell'byr NPC!
Fjell’Byr IC common knowledge on Clan cats: As it stands, the average Fjell feline has only very recently discovered the existence of the Clan cats, through second-hand stories of the high ranks’ time amongst the Clans of the Lake, as well as through the Clan cats who joined Fjell’Byr from the Fjell’Byr patrol. As a result, Fjell’Byr IC common knowledge for the ways of Clan life is very general, and at times somewhat inaccurate due to rumors. Details are limited based on your specific character’s direct exposure to this knowledge, or perhaps not known whatsoever.
Character Relationships
All intimate relationships in Rise of the Clans must be appropriate: warriors-aged characters (i.e. starting at 12 moons) may only be in intimate relationships with other adult-aged characters. The age gap in the relationship must be appropriate relative to the characters’ ages, and their stages in life. Apprentice-aged characters (i.e. 6-12 moons) may have crushes, but may not enter any formal relationships until they are warriors. Kit-aged characters (i.e. 0-6 moons) may never have any sort of romance-related plots: they are far too young. All relationships in your character's history with NPCs must follow this rule.
