Most students who join RHS Speech & Debate will compete in at least one tournament during the school year. Members are encouraged to compete as often as they can make room in their schedules. The more experience a student has, the more successful they will be! Typically, a student needs to be involved in multiple competitions before they begin to win medals and trophies.
RHS Speech & Debate Team competes in two leagues. The first is called Portland Urban Debate League (PUDL), open only to novice (beginning) teams in the Portland area, especially East County. These teams currently include Reynolds HS, McDaniel HS, Franklin HS, Centennial HS, Parkrose HS, and Roosevelt HS. These competitions are often on Saturdays, though occasionally weekday competitions happen.
The second is through the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), the same as student athletes. OSAA covers the entire state of Oregon, so competitions generally include schools from beyond the Portland-metro area, especially Central and Southern Oregon. Most of the time, these competitions are Saturdays, sometimes also including a Friday or a Sunday. Sunday competitions (rare) always occur during a long weekend when school doesn't happen that Monday.
The following is the list of competitions Reynolds intends to compete in this school year (subject to change and dates are tentative):
