Humorous Interpretation

Humorous Interpretation is an individual speech event in which the student selects any humorous piece of writing to perform. The writing must be from a single published source--play, screenplay, short story, novel, or one or more poems. (The piece cannot be directly from an audio or video recording.) Based on this writing, the student creates an original speech of no more than ten minutes by "cutting" the piece down to its essential and most powerful components. The speech needs to be memorized and performed without any use of physical costumes or props. The speaker introduces the piece before performing it, focusing on delivering with vocal inflection, facial expression, gestures, and movement to enhance their interpretation and the overall mood of their speech. Especially in this event, students put on different voices to represent different characters in the story.
