LIELL (Literary Interpretation for English Language Learners) is a speech event for students whose first language is not English but they are currently learning. Students create a speech of no more than five minutes which includes an introduction and focuses on a chosen piece of literature--an excerpt from a novel, short story, poem, or script. The literature can be anything, but the student should pick something which interests them. The student practices reading the text, focusing on delivery. Their voice, facial expressions, and occasional movement/gesture demonstrate the meaning the student would like to convey. The speech does not have to be and should not be memorized, as part of the event is using the printed text as a prop in the presentation. See the PDFs above for event rules and a sample ballot a judge uses to evaluate a round. To view an example of this event, please speak directly with Coach Schiller or any teacher from the ELD department at RHS.
