SPEECH CAPTAINHi, everyone! My name is Seryca Monroe and this will be my second year as Speech Captain for the RHS Speech and Debate team. This is my fourth and unfortunately final year in Speech and Debate, and I am so proud to continue to be part of it. My job is to help others succeed as well as be a role model for newcomers and returners. Last year I took first place at the District tournament and second place at the State Championships for my After Dinner Speech Ronnie D and the Gays which focused on educationally endorsed homophobia specifically through the Don't Say Gay Bill. I look forward to continuing my After Dinner Speaking and helping everyone feel as satisfied with their speech and debate career as I do.
At the beginning of my freshman year, the club wasn't of much interest to me, but after I took some time to carefully consider it, I decided to give it a chance. At our first practice, I was absolutely clueless. As the year went on, I realized that I found comfort in this team. Not only did I form relationships that helped me grow as a person, but I have also amplified my skills in a way that I can and will carry with me throughout my life. I full-heartedly believe you should all give Speech and Debate a chance. Maybe, you'll find peace in case cards, arguing with purpose, endless memorization, practicing your speech with random walls, hard work and determination, and the great self-satisfaction of winning (or coming close) just like I do.
Some advice for newcomers: fake it till you make it. Fake the confidence on stage until it's real. And when it's real, become it. Become the most confident you can be, speak even when your voice shakes, because it will. If you do this, and add some determination, you'll be great. So, to that I say, get your cases/speeches out, get your timer set, adjust your blazer, smile at your judges, and let's do this!
