Are you a theater student looking for an opportunity to expand your skills? Try out this event!
Duo Interpretation is an individual speech event in which TWO individual students select a dramatic or humorous piece to perform together. The writing must be from a single published source--play, screenplay, short story, novel, or one or more poems. Based on this writing, the student creates an original speech of no more than ten minutes by "cutting" the piece down to its essential and most powerful components. The speech needs to be memorized and performed without any use of physical costumes or props. The speaker introduces the piece near the beginning, focusing on delivering with vocal inflection, facial expression, gestures, and character placement to enhance their interpretation and the overall mood of their speech. Movement is meant to be limited and not central to this event. Students put on different voices to represent different characters in the story and rely primarily on facial expressions and gestures. See the above PDFs for the event rules as well as a sample ballot a judge uses to evaluate a round. Use the tool to the right to create an introduction.
