PBL: Egg production & sustainability

The Pine Log Chicks arrived in August 2021 to help students learn more about life cycles through living examples. Students primarily in PreK-second grade are learning about what chickens eat, how the litter can be reused, how often chickens lay eggs, and that chickens remember faces.

This Problem-Based Learning project is focused on consistent egg production by the Pine Log Chicks and the sustainability of the coop.

Egg Incubation

"In second grade, we incubated eggs and candle them frequently so that students could have a hands-on experience in learning about life cycles and living creatures. It was also a time to expose them to fractions and parts of a whole." -Ansley Jerauld

"We incubated eggs in my fourth grade classrooms to help teach fractions. Throughout the 21-day incubation period, we would candle the eggs and determine a fraction of eggs we thought were viable and compared that fraction to our hatch rate. We created diagrams and timelines in our STEM journal to keep track of our thoughts and data." -Ansley Jerauld

Chicken Day

Chicken Day is an annual celebration of the Pine Log Chickens. Everyone dresses up in chicken shirts and costumes and participates in chicken-related activities. For 2026, students submitted designs for a Chicken Day shirt. The color and shirt back design were inspired by student designs. The shirts were sold at a slight profit to benefit the Hen Den.
