Students learned about farming to connect with their studies on life cycles from a local farmer.
Students listened to an aircraft mechanic from the Army and asked many questions about military vehicles.
Students learned about lab testing to connect with their studies on cells as well as living and non-living things.
Students listened to a presentation on being an electrical construction project manager which made a connection to fifth grade's study on electricity.
On December 13, 2023, ornithologist Dr. Renee Carlton spoke to students in fourth grade and fifth grade about the Killdeer birds that live on the Pine Log Elementary School campus. Since the Killdeer are the focus of our upper grades PBL, students presented their research and proposal for the bird sanctuary, then asked many questions to the bird expert.

Students developed new ideas from the session with the ornithologist to support the PLES Killdeer.
PLES is fortunate to have a NASA Ambassador who delivers a presentation on our solar system and sets up a telescope for second-grade students to safely view the sun. Second-grade students are connecting their studies of the the moon phases to the egg data from Kindergarten as part of our PBL on chickens. Although Nick Johnson visits second-grade each year, these pictures are from his presentation on September 19, 2024.

PLES hosted a STEM Career Day in 2023 and 2024 for students in all grades to learn more about STEM careers from local businesses and PLES parents.

During class visits with our school counselor, Francie Livingston, students explored STEM Careers and created mini posters to share their knowledge of one career with their classmates. These posters were displayed in a main hallway for all students to gain inspiration for their future career.
The posters included job duties and a related illustration.
Some of the mini-posters included additional facts about the career and a salary.
When students visit the Learning Log, the PLES media center, for their library visit, our media specialist will read a book selection about a STEM career several times a year, especially when the topic relates what students are learning in the regular classroom.
