I retired in 2020, and that Christmas I bought myself some acrylic paints. When the new year rolled around, I started painting. I had no idea then how much it would become a part of my life. I had never done much drawing or painting before, but I quickly discovered how much I enjoyed it. I love that there is always something new to learn, something different to try, and new ways to challenge myself.
Not long after I started painting, I discovered PAPI, and that opened up a whole new world for me. It gave me opportunities to get outdoors, paint with others, and make wonderful friends who share my love of art. Being part of the Idaho art community has added so much to my life, and I’m grateful for the friendships and encouragement I’ve found along the way.
I enjoy painting all kinds of subjects, but I have a special fondness for everyday places and moments. Cozy interiors, familiar surroundings, and the little details that give a place its character often catch my eye. I also love painting the beauty and majesty of the world around me. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that inspire me most.
I enjoy experimenting with different materials and techniques, including watercolor, ink, gouache, and soft pastels. Each medium offers something different, and I like discovering new ways to express what I see and feel. I’m still learning, and I hope I always will be. I don’t feel the need to settle into one particular style or stick to one subject. Part of the fun is trying new things and seeing where they lead me.
For me, painting is about more than the finished piece. It gives me a reason to slow down, look a little closer, and appreciate the small things I might otherwise miss. If my paintings bring someone a little joy, remind them of a special place, or help them see the beauty in everyday life, then that makes painting even more rewarding.
I feel lucky to have discovered this passion when I did. Painting has brought so much more into my life than I ever expected, and I look forward to continuing to learn, experiment, make friends, and enjoy wherever this journey takes me.
