Artist Statement
As a life-long westerner, a major influence is the “West Coast ” movement which opened me to the dynamics of color and light best found when painting outside on location – plein air. Always, it is the excitement of the creative process that, I hope, results in a work that communicates to the viewer. Favorite subjects are landscape (sky, water, rock), floral, railroad/industrial and streetscapes. The art of N. Eric Oback, Rex Brandt, Dong Kingman, Ben Shahn, Maynard Dixon, Edward Hopper and Ted Rose have greatly added to my analysis and approach. Living many years in Montana, a 2021 move brought us to Boise, Idaho and family. I joined the Idaho Watercolor Society for the fun and friendship of painting with local artists. Thru this I discovered and joined PAPI. Recent happenings: Idaho Watercolor Society Rotunda Exhibit, PAPI Iconic Idaho Exhibit. IWS 2025 Juried Annual Exhibition, Montana Watercolor Society Juried 2025 National Watermedia Exhibition. 2024 Eagle Plein Air Paint-out: Best Floral.

Art and design have long been a driving part of my life. I began four years of formal art training at 17, earning AA and BA degrees in Commercial Art with an advertising emphasis. Required to paint plein air in college, watercolor became my primary medium. Professional work included commercial illustration, graphic design, and art direction. With graduate MBA studies, I became a partner in a regional advertising agency, handling financial clients, later resulting inbecoming a registered investment advisor. All the while I continued to paint, while active with art organizations, galleries, museums and juried exhibition events. Experiences include teaching watercolor in community art centers, volunteer in the C.M. Russell Auction of Original Western Art, Great Falls, Montana; Paris Gibson Square Community Art Center board member, and Western Region Chair, American Advertising Federation.
