I have been a member of the Plein Air Painters of Idaho since 2014 and deeply appreciate the rewards this practice has brought to my work. Painting outdoors has strengthened my ability to see the landscape in new ways, constantly challenging and invigorating me. The possibilities feel endless. I find oil paint to be the perfect medium for plein air painting due to its versatility and ability to perform well in all weather conditions. Each season offers something unique. My favorite times to paint are spring, early summer, and fall, when nature feels most alive with color and movement.

Spring is especially inspiring—the meadows burst into bloom, the foothills glow with countless shades of green, and migratory birds pass through Idaho’s valleys. Melting snow feeds the rivers and springs, sending water rushing into the lowlands. The fresh air and soothing sounds of nature bring a sense of renewal after the long winter months.

Summer brings a different energy. Vacationers float down the Payette River, sheep herders move their flocks through the hills, and local farms and vineyards come to life under the sun. Then, in fall, nature delivers its grand finale: bursts of orange, red, yellow, and purple contrast beautifully against the evergreens. The transition into winter is spectacular.

Painting in the cold months is more of a challenge for me, but I always try to brave the elements and find inspiration. Living in the Northwest, especially in Idaho, is both exciting and rewarding. My favorite places to paint are the Boise foothills and along the Payette River, where the landscape is always changing, yet endlessly inspiring.
