ABSTRACT: Iterated commutators of complex vector fields were first studied by Kohn in the Seventies in his solution of the complex Laplacian. Using iterated commutators one obtains a natural measurement of the Levi degeneracy of a CR manifold. In this talk, building on work of Bloom, Bloom-Graham, and D'Angelo, we present partial answers to some old questions concerning this measurement. We also discuss the relation with the nowadays more standard algebraic notion of order of contact with complex varieties and with recent work of Zaitsev.
