GIS Day 2017

Department of Earth Science and Geography, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course students successfully participated in the LA County GIS Day 2017 event and presented CSUDH display booth. Students talked and presented their GIS class projects in the booth. This was an excellent opportunity for students to see real world application of GIS, and it was good networking opportunity as well. I was one of the GIS Day speakers and talked about GIS in fiber optic cable mapping and management.

GIS Day is celebrated every year on the Wednesday of Geography Awareness Week (the week before Thanksgiving). It provides a forum for users of GIS to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. LA County GIS Day was held at Olive Court at Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday, November 15 2017, 9 am – 3 pm. There were about 50 booths (including Department of Earth Science and Geography, CSU Dominguez Hills) 11 guest speakers (including Key Note Chris Cappelli from ESRI, and Parveen Chhetri from CSU Dominguez Hills), and an impressive map gallery.

GIS Student (Elvis Carrillo) Experience on GIS Day Participation

GIS day was a wonderful learning experience. I was able to network with different organizations that work in the City of Los Angeles. I met Helen Chavez who works with the LA County Office of Emergency Management (LACOEM) and Cesar Espinosa who works with the Department of Beaches and Harbors (DPH). I was nervous before arriving to Grand Park because I saw that everyone was dressed in professional attire. After setting up our CSUDH booth I had the chance to meet people and share with them the classes that we offer. I met many alumni who were interested in the classes that we offer at CSUDH so it was really fun to share with them my current experience. I was really amazed that the LA Fire Department (LAFD) had a mobile station for any fire; in the city or wildfires. The fire mobile was equipped with computers and a poster sized printer so that can better assess the fire. I was able to meet different students from CSU Los Angeles, Cal Poly Pomona, USC, and UCLA. I thought our presence helped us with our prestige because many people commented that it was CSUDH first time there. I also saw that there are different types of equipment the LAFD had for mapping out beaches, lakes, and water bodies. The boat with remote sensing and radar capabilities was pretty awesome.

I would like to thank you because it was my first time experiencing the power of GIS. I never expected to see so many individuals of all ages and in levels of the professional sector. I have emailed Ms. Chavez from LACOEM to ask for internship and volunteer opportunities. I have provided them with your business card in hopes that they contact you for future collaborations with our campus and our department. I cannot wait until next year so that we have more technology, classwork, and presentations to offer at our booth. We also need to ask for more support from the department in advertising.
