Fire ecology in Nepal - Dendrochronology based study
Currently, I am working with a master student (Saroj Basnet) from Golden Gate International College, Tribhuvan University - Kathmandu Nepal to understand the fire ecology of the Nepal. This study will be part of the Saroj master thesis work, and project is funded by the Department of Environment, Government of Nepal. We are planning to collect disc samples from burned trees and tree-cores from live trees from the Langtang National Park, central Nepal. I have visited Langtang many times for field work and seen fire scares on trees or burned trees. Local people also mentioned about lighting initiated fires in the Park. Saroj is currently reviewing the literature and polishing the methodology. We are waiting for winter to over, so that we can go to the field collect samples. I assume this will be the first study to attempt fire history reconstruction using tree-ring from the Nepal Himalaya.
