Fuel Efficient

Learning Intention: Relate tables, graphs and equations to linear relationships found in number and spatial patterns

Which of the following cars is the most fuel efficient?

Problem: Mr Corney's car used 51 Litres of petrol to travel 487 km. Assuming that the car would travel 0 km with 0 litres, answer the following questions:

a) Graph the data. From the graph estimate how far the car would travel using 20 l, 40 l, 60 l.

b) Create an equation the relates number of kilometres travelled to litres of petrol used. Use this equation to answer the following questions:

i) How far could the car go with 15 l of fuel, 35 L, 70 L

ii) How many litres of fuel would the car need to travel 200km, 700km, 1000km?

Note: for Achieved level use 50 l of fuel to travel 500km.

Extension:

Mr Corney's wife's car travelled 433km using 38 litres of fuel. Which car is the most efficient? If petrol cost $2.18 per litre, how much would be the difference in cost in driving to Auckland (203 km) between the two cars?
