Substitution Between Feet
Lesson 8
Lesson 8
A printable pdf copy of all the exercises for this course is available HERE.
Goal:
Develop smooth legato between pedal notes by transferring a sustained note from one foot to the other without interrupting sound or rhythm.
Instructions:
Select the following stops on your organ:
Pedal: Octave 8 (Principal 8) and Choral Bass 4
Watch the demonstration video for the exercise and practice the technique as shown.
Stay relaxed. Keep both feet loose and flexible to reduce tension.
Foot placement tips:
Use the space between the big toe and second toe when playing black keys.
Use the inside edge of the foot on the ball of the foot for white keys.
Use the Gap Method:
While one foot plays a note, pre-locate the other foot to the next pedal to be played. Use your toes to feel the gaps between the groupings of black keys as needed. These tactile landmarks can help you find notes without looking down at your feet.
Do not lift the first foot until the second foot is fully in position and taking over the note.
Practice slowly, and increase the tempo only when transitions are clean and confident.
Daily Practice Recommendation:
Practice for 5 minutes daily. Consistent, focused practice will build muscle memory and confidence over time.
