Pedal Crossing
Lesson 5
Goal:
Develop precise coordination and awareness when crossing one foot over or under the other on the pedalboard.
Instructions:
Select the following stops on your organ:
Pedal: Octave 8 (Principal 8) and Choral Bass 4
Watch the demonstration video for the exercise and practice the technique as shown.
Cross smoothly.
Pull the non-crossing foot slightly back on the pedal to create space for the crossing foot to move cleanly over or under.
Avoid looking down.
Train your feet to feel and navigate the pedalboard by touch.
Practice slowly.
Focus on accuracy and comfort before increasing speed.
Use a metronome to maintain a steady tempo.
Increase the tempo only when crossings are fluid and controlled.
Daily Practice Recommendation:
Dedicate 5 minutes daily to this technique. Consistent, mindful practice builds muscle memory, confidence, and control.
