Pedal Interval Drills
Lesson 4
Lesson 4
A printable pdf copy of all the exercises for this course is available HERE.
Pedal Technique Checkpoints:
Keep your eyes on the score
Keep the heels (or heel/arch) together when toes reach up to a 4th apart
Keep the knees comfortably together when feet play up to an octave apart
When playing white keys, play just clear of the black keys
When playing black keys cover half of the key or less with your toe
Tip the feet inward and play on the inside edge of the bottom of the foot (exception: when reaching the right foot to the far left of the pedalboard or the left foot to the far right, it is okay to tip the foot outward)
Pre-locate: as soon as a foot finishes playing a key, prepare that foot over the next key.
Goal:
To develop accuracy, coordination, and agility in both feet by playing parallel scales on the organ pedalboard using consistent toe-only technique. This exercise reinforces evenness of rhythm, balanced posture, and unified foot movement.
Instructions:
Select the following stops on your organ:
Pedal: Octave 8 (Principal 8) and Choral Bass 4
Watch the demonstration video for each exercise and practice the technique as shown.
Tempo: Practice at a slower tempo as needed to maintain control. Increase speed only after achieving consistency and accuracy.
Technique:
Play toe-only using alternating feet as marked (right and left feet are indicated by the markings above and below each note).
Keep your knees close together and pivot at the hips to maintain balance.
Look ahead and avoid watching your feet.
Focus on playing evenly and smoothly.
Listen for perfect legato.
Strive for fluid ankle motion without unnecessary foot lifting.
Use the Gap Method:
While one foot plays a note, pre-locate the other foot to the next pedal to be played. Use your toes to feel the gaps between the groupings of black keys as needed. These tactile landmarks can help you find notes without looking down at your feet.
Posture & Positioning:
Sit tall on the bench, slightly forward, with your body centered.
Use the inside edge of each toe for precise contact with the pedals.
Daily Practice Recommendation:
Spend 5 minutes daily on these techniques. Consistent practice builds tactile awareness, coordination, and confidence over time.
