The Objective:Â
To train pianists to become organ accompanists for worship services.
For centuries, the organ has played a central role in Christian worship. Yet, many people find it intimidating because of its many keyboards, controls, and features. However, the primary responsibility of a church organist is simple and sacred: to help others increase their faith in Jesus Christ through sacred music and to support congregational singing with confidence.
This course is designed to teach the foundational organ-playing skills necessary for effective hymn accompaniment and meaningful prelude and postlude music in worship services. While there is much more that can be learned about the organ, the principles and techniques taught in this course will provide you with the knowledge and tools needed to confidently serve as an organist in your own ward or branch.
This course is most effective when paired with the guidance of an organ mentor—someone experienced in organ playing and familiar with the principles taught throughout the course. A mentor can provide encouragement, answer questions, demonstrate techniques, and help guide your development as you learn new skills. The course is also intended to support structured stake or local organ training programs, where experienced organists can help train and strengthen current and future church organists. Additional information for implementing a stake or local organ training program can be found here.
Well-trained organists are greatly needed in the Church. Sacred music has the power to strengthen faith in Jesus Christ, invite the Spirit, and support meaningful worship. This course is designed not only to help organists develop technical skill and musical confidence, but also to help them use those abilities to support worship and encourage enthusiastic congregational singing.
As you work through this course, remember that steady and consistent progress is more important than perfection. With patience, preparation, and regular practice, you can develop the skills needed to serve confidently and faithfully as an organist in the Church.
