What Is Nyack Doing to Help Ukraine?
By Zoë Ryder
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, you’ve most likely heard about the war in Ukraine. Russia started the war against Ukraine in 2014, but Putin recently launched a full-scale invasion.

Are There More Wheels or Doors in the World?
By Layla Roy and Karlie Shatoff
Are there more doors or wheels in the world? This seemingly arbitrary question sparked a heated debate on TikTok earlier in March. Users avidly chose sides, sharing their opinions on the topic. #TeamDoors has thus far received over 55 million views on the app, but #TeamWheels takes the lead with a massive 137 million views. Whether the world has more doors or wheels may remain forever unknown, but students at Nyack still have their own thoughts to contribute to the debate.
The pandemic had many downs. Everyone was stuck in their homes with nothing to do except think. Singer-songwriter Ashe was among these people. While stuck in her thought bubble, she reflected on her past “psychologically abusive” marriage. She filed for divorce in 2017; she also happened to write the song that would kick start her career only hours later. “Moral of the story” was released on Valentine's Day of 2019. The hit single did not catch popularity until June 2020 when the song became popular on TikTok. It quickly skyrocketed through the charts, gaining over 10 million streams. She was shocked with her newfound fame and was so excited to expand on the idea that inspired “Moral of the story”.
Redhawk Reel Review: A Silent Voice
In 2016, one of my favorite Japanese animation or anime movies, A Silent Voice, was released. It was based on the original manga Koe no Katachi (The Shape of Voice), written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ōima. The movie adaptation was directed by Naoko Yamada, who has also worked on shows like K-On, Clannad, Hōyka, and Free, and it was animated by Kyoto Animations. A Silent Voice is an incredible emotional drama that deserves a very special review as it is incredibly different from the other movies I have reviewed.

Why Sustainability Should Impact Your College Decision
By Nina Petrou
With college acceptances ringing in for the senior class and applications opening for juniors, many students are choosing where they want to go to school. As the experience may seem daunting, an important factor that is often overlooked is a school’s sustainability practices. Increasingly, college and university campuses are embracing sustainability as it improves the quality of life on campus. According to Chris Adam, Coordinator of Sustainable Campuses at Dawson College, “A sustainable campus is one that has achieved a reduction of its ecological footprint well beyond standards and has done so with an institutional ethos that advocates for justice, peace, respect and action to protect the integrity of natural systems and demonstrates an open willingness to share this information beyond its own walls, wherever it’s needed”. This allows schools to create their own individual path for achieving sustainability and allow for their students to feel protected while conserving resources for future generations.
Humans of Nyack
"Something that has significantly shaped me is dealing with grief at a young age. My dad died when I was 9, so my childhood was disrupted and completely uprooted in many ways. I had to adapt to a lot of change. I had to learn how to feel emotions that I didn’t know existed. Learning how to accept these big emotions when I was so young definitely expanded my emotional capacity. Observing the grief of everyone around me has manifested into a heightened awareness of other people's emotions. The understanding and empathy that has stayed with me because of this experience is crucial to my identity. It deeply affects how I think about the world." - Grace Delaney, Junior
"I'm very passionate about pushing myself and learning new things, especially in the arts. Whether its theater or gymnastics, which is something I also like to do, I like to push myself and I enjoy doing what I love to its fullest." - Nicholas Behson, Junior
"I think the closest thing to magic is a genuine laugh. One of my favorite things in the world is making a connection with someone through humor. We could've never spoken or have nothing in common but a good laugh forms such a genuine connection between people. I could be having an awful day but a good joke can fix that in a split second." - Jaydon Shatoff, Junior

Censorship's Virality: What Are Schools Doing to Classic Literature?
By Josie Rothman
Is book-banning the COVID-19 of the literary world? Both censorship and the coronavirus have been spreading like wildfire, transmitting from person to person, school district to school district. We know how viruses are spread, but what is causing the outbreak of banning books? Why is the public suddenly rejecting books taught in American high schools? One text in particular, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, has come under serious scrutiny.

As spring rolls in, so does the warm weather and fun activities. If you are bored and looking for some excitement, then this is the article for you. These are the top 4 things to do in Nyack during April.

In some homes, freedom is earned. Caregivers place restrictions on kids and gradually lift them as kids prove that they are trustworthy and responsible. Other families afford children all of their freedoms from the beginning and only set limitations if children violate their caregivers’ trust. Often, an open conversation with mutual trust and respect for one another is enough to prevent future conflict. Harsh punishment, on the other hand, “does not change the tendency to engage in the behavior that was punished,” said Dr. Michael Karson in Psychology Today. The student body has heard our administrators refer to the Nyack High School community as a “family” on many occasions, yet they have suddenly stripped the student body of our freedoms without any explanation.
