Competition in unit vs. ad valorem taxes revisited: when ad valorem tax competition prevails (revised on May 6)
Abstract:
The studies on capital tax competition have assumed that the governments compete for mobile capital in unit tax, and this assumption is justified by Lockwood (2004) which proves that unit tax competition is always welfare superior to ad valorem tax competition among symmetric countries. This paper presents the reexamination of governments' choice on tax method in the framework of asymmetric tax competition. The result shows that capital importing countries compete by way of ad valorem tax while the capital exporting countries endogenously choose unit tax as a policy instrument; The asymmetric countries do not compete in the same tax instrument, as assumed in the literature.

Inequality, mobility and redistributive politics
Abstract:
This paper develops a model where income inequality and intergenerational mobility are jointly determined via redistributive politics. The model includes two key factors: accessibility of tertiary education for poor-born agents and multiple selffulfilling expectations of agents. Given these factors, the model provides predictions of cross-country differences in inequality and mobility consistent with empirical observations.

Learning, overconfidence and underconfidence in search
Abstract:
This paper is an examination of the influence of individuals' learning about their own type in search on the marriage market. Agents before learning their own types may accept/reject the opposite sexes they reject/accept when they know their own type certainly. We consider a model in which there are three types of men and women according to marital type (high, middle, and low), and there exist women with incomplete information about their own type. Then, the women with the uncertainty about own types learn about their own type from the offers/rejections by men. The results obtained are as follows: the rejections of the women with the uncertainty about own type for the men whom those women accept when they know their own type certainly change the marital behaviors of lower type singles. As a result, the lowest type men cannot marry. On the other hand, the acceptances of the women for the men whom those women reject when they know their own type certainly affect only those men but do not influence on the lower type singles by women's predictions of their learning process. Even if sex is reversed, these results are confirmed.

The backward-bending commute times of married women with household responsibility
Abstract:
The existing literature has shown that married women tend to choose short commutes because of relatively low wages combined with relatively heavy household responsibilities. The theoretical section of this paper, however, proposes that married women employed in highly paid positions also undertake short commutes, while middle-class married women choose long commutes. These results suggest that the commute times of married women display a backward-bending pattern. Using a sample of full-time employed married women in Japan, the empirical section of this paper also appears to support this finding. Moreover, the results suggest that highly paid married women can still secure greater leisure time with short commutes, despite retaining a heavy load of domestic responsibilities.

Intra-National Regional Heterogeneity in International Trade
Abstract:
We present a two-country model, specifically with two regions in home country. Each region consists of two types of labor; skilled labor is required to set up a firm, and unskilled labor is used as marginal input for production. Trade cost accrues both intra-nationally and internationally. International trade costs are assumed to be different across regions. Our model produces a region-based gravity model and generates heterogeneity among regional exports in terms of responses with respect to economic size. We also find a home market effect at the regional level. Moreover, we are able to show the relative magnitude of the home market effect among home regions, in terms of a change in the export share. We empirically test our theoretical propositions with an application to the export dataset of Japanese regions. Our empirical results provide strong evidence in support of both a region-based home-market effect and a relative home-market effect.
