As a Health Scholar, you will gain firsthand experience in both clinical and administrative health care settings and become an integral part of the care delivery team. You will assist with basic care for patients alongside nurses, physicians, and other members of the care delivery team, and have opportunities to learn the “business” of health care, preparing you for a health care career.

If you are interested in a career related to medicine, it is essential to gain experience in that specific field. This program helps you do that! There are numerous options that allow you to gain a genuine sense of what it is like to work in a hospital and collaborate with like-minded professionals for the benefit of patients. You will gain critical experience hours, allowing you to be hands-on with patients as you rotate through various specialties across the hospital.

This program is offered year-round, with enrollment occurring every month or every other month. Most individuals graduate from the program in 15 months after completing 280 hours of clinical experience with a commitment of one 4-hour shift per week. For those looking to complete the program more quickly, we offer 9-month and 3-month options, which include priority shift selection to help you finish at an accelerated pace.

When do I need to show proof of immunizations and CPR certification?
Proof of immunization and CPR certifications are due during your clearance appointment which is scheduled before the first day of training. You do not need to complete these items before submitting your application.

Can I transfer from one site to another site?
Yes, you can transfer from one site to another site, depending on space availability at the new site. There is a $75 transfer fee.

How often will I rotate into a new clinical or administrative department? Do I choose the department?
Scholars rotate into new departments every three months after completing a minimum of 48 hours in their current department. Scholars will fill out a department preference survey each rotation and are placed in new departments as space becomes available.

Why do some sites have more clinical areas than other sites? Why do some sites have only one or two clinical areas?
The number of clinical areas varies based on several factors, including the length of time the site has been open, its size, and the specific needs of the site. For new sites opened within the last two years, one to two clinical areas are typically opened every three months. For smaller sites, such as an acute care site with a relatively low number of beds, there are fewer areas available because the site has fewer clinical areas overall. The needs of the site also play a role – some sites may require more students in certain clinical areas and thus have fewer open clinical areas.

Our program allows scholars to experience many departments throughout Deaconess and Valley hospitals. Nursing students would work alongside CNAs, RNs, Doctors, Physical and Occupational Therapists, and others. The COPE program is a clinical experience program similar to a volunteer program at the hospital, but we are partnered with KGI, and they have created our training materials, which provide our scholars with a broader scope of practice than a hospital volunteer. A CNA has a larger scope of practice than a Health Scholar, but our Health Scholars are able to see many different units and start exploring what type of unit they could see themselves working on! Health Scholars are unable to chart, take glucose levels, or walk a fall-risk patient by themselves as a CNA could. A Health Scholar is able to independently take vitals, round on patients, assist staff in walking a fall risk patient, repositioning, and transferring as a CNA would. The COPE program provides nursing students with the opportunity to network with staff, helping them secure future employment opportunities.
