12 Days of Techmas
AI Edition - Day 2
Safety and Privacy
Using AI
On this second day of Techmas, we need to take a moment to be serious. Learning about AI and tinkering with AI is fun and cool, BUT we need to make sure that we take our privacy and the privacy of our students seriously.
It is important to protect personal data when using generative AI tools. You should never put Peronally Identifiable Information or PII into any AI tool.
First we need to think about what data is considered Personally Identifiable Information. We need to keep this in mind for ourselves as well as others when entering information into AI tools.
Using AI is not the same as a Google Search! Generative AI has to collect information from somewhere and when you upload data, information, documents, etc. it is gathering information. These tools use the information entered into them to help answer questions and to continue learning so if you upload personal information into a generative AI tool and there is a data breach, that information could be shared with others.
Check out these tips for protecting your personal data when using generative AI tools
It is also important to protect student data when using generative AI tools. It is our job to be aware of what information we are entering into these tools. They can be a wonderful assistant to help us analyze information, BUT we need to make sure that the identifiable information is removed.
Check out these tips for protecting student data when using AI tools.
Where can I find trusted AI Tools? I am so glad you asked! Davidson County Schools has an AI Dashboard with a list of Tools and Resources that will tell you which ones are acceptable for what ages. This is a great place to start if you are new to AI tools. I will also be sharing a variety of tools over these 12 Days.
This can also be found as a link in Classlink for teachers
If you haven't checked out the DCS AI Dashboard this is a great resource for:
DCS AI Guidelines
Tools and Resources
AI Information for Staff
AI Information for Students
AI Information for Parents
This resource is updated regularly as AI is changing constantly, new resources become available and guidelines are updated.
NC DPI has created AI Guidelines which include recommendations and considerations for PK-13 Public Schools. This is a great document to get information on implementing AI into the Classroom. There is a wealth of information from safety and ethics to AI Literacy to how to introduce AI to different age groups. This is a living document and is regularly updated.
What does this mean for you? As we begin to us AI to assist with daily tasks and move to implementing the use of AI with our students we need to be aware of and practice measures to ensure the safety and privacy of personal information. We should also discuss with students how to use anonimity when using AI so they do not share personal information as well. Get into the habit of talking with students during assignments about the "Do's and Don'ts" of sharing personal information.
Want to earn CEUs for participating in this year's 12 Days of Techmas? It is easy!
Each day there will be a task to complete based on the tool for that day. Complete the Form below and share your completed task. At the end of the 12 Days of Techmas you will receive a certificate for the days you participated in. If you complete all 12 tasks you can earn 3 hours of renewal credit.
Your Day 2 task is to think about how we can share important information with students about practicing safety and protecting our personal information when using AI tools.
To get credit for today's task, use the information from today's activity to create a checklist that you could share with students on how they can protect their Personally Identifiable Information when they are using AI tools. Describe why it is important for students and even you to protect your personal information.
To submit your Day 2 task, complete the 12 Days of Techmas CEU Form
Don't have time to work on today's task? That's okay! You can work on these throughout the holiday break and January.
