12 Days of Techmas
Day 9
QR Codes
On the ninth day of Techmas, Ms. D shared some cool ideas for creating and using QR Codes in the classroom and beyond.
I know what you are thinking...."okay Ms. D, we know about QR Codes..." But, I still feel like they are one of the most underutilized tools in our toolbelt, especially when students can scan them easily on their Chromebooks. Did you know that QR Code usage is way up since COVID? It can save paper
Let's take a look at some of my favorite tools for creating as well as a few fun ideas that can be easily implemented into your lessons.
Creating QR Codes
QR Code Generators
QR Code Generators are a quick and easy way to create custom QR Codes. Some of these you can even add a logo or image! There are TONs of generators out there. Before you select one, check to see if there are any limits on the number of scans or the number of QR Codes you can create for FREE. Here are a few of my favorites and details on any limits they have.

This QR Code Generator is 100% Free and does not have any limits on the number of scans. You can also customize your QR Code with colors, logos and style.
This is the one I use regularly.

Using the link from Google Chrome is so helpful when needing to share links to websites, videos, etc.
Scanning QR Codes
Did you know that student Chromebooks have a QR Code Scanner built into the Camera App?
It is simple and easy to use. I have students use their Chromebooks for activities all the time using QR Codes.
Did you know all you have to do on most phones to scan a QR Code is open the Camera App?
Open the Camera App
Hold it so the QR Code is on the screen
Click the link that pops up on the screen to access the information
There are also a number of QR Code Scanner Apps available as well. I find that using the Camera App is the easiest way to scan QR Codes now.
Ideas for Using QR Codes
Just a few ideas for using QR Codes
Talking Posters - You can have students record their descriptions of their poster presentations and have the QR Code posted on the poster. Parents, students, and teachers can scan the QR Code and hear the student in their own words describing what they know.
Book Reviews/Book Trailers - Have QR Codes sitting with books that link to book review videos by students or book trailers. This is a great way to booktalk books!
Sign In/Sign Out Forms and Accessing Surveys - QR Codes are a quick way to have people sign in, access surveys, and more.
I have, who has - We have done this in a few forms over the years from math practice to exam reviews. You will post the answer at the top of the paper and below is a QR Code leading to the next question. Students will scan the QR Code to work on the question, then look around the room for the correct answer. Once they find it they scan the next question. It gets kids up and moving.
Links to Virtual Field Trips with VR Goggles - Have QR Codes on sheets so students can scan with ipads or phone (if using goggles) to access VR videos.
Quick links to digital resources. Make it a flyer, poster or even a handout for student notebooks.
They can even be used for Digital Business Cards - This is one I created with my school contact info on for when I need to share my school email, school phone number, etc. with students, parents, and other teachers.
