These are the robber flies which use their elongated legs to catch other insects on the wing. 16 genera are found in the British Isles, from four subfamilies - a total of 29 species. The key should allow identification of our species.
There are online keys to the European species here: http://www.robberflies.info/keyger/htmle/key.html
For more information I would recommend buying a copy of British Soldierflies and their Allies by Stubbs and Drake, available here http://www.benhs.org.uk/publications/british-soldierflies-and-their-allies-second-edition/
