Keys for the identification of British Elateridae (click beetles)

This family contains a number of species which are quite similar to one another. The keys below are adapted from translations from the German but are supplemented by my own photographs of specimens I've collected and museum specimens; using these I have sought to clarify some of the characters used. They are still in a fairly early stage of refinement and this is an ongoing project. I hope they may serve to help in the identification of the species of this family. In order to help entomologists with terminology in this difficult group there is a detailed illustrated section on the morphology of the family at the end of the subfamily key.

Key to British subfamilies, with keys to species except for subfamilies Denticollinae and Elaterinae. At the end of this key there is a report on a dissection of Agriotes pallidulus, a frequently-collected elaterid, which occurs in my vegetable patch.
