How to find a trustworthy business mentor

Not every entrepreneur who graduated from business school nor does graduating from business school automatically spells the success of one’s endeavor. Entrepreneurs may also need guidance from a business mentor for several reasons; inexperience, a moral compass, innovative thinking, and many more. Risk assessment expert Michael Saltzstein believes that finding a trustworthy business mentor can greatly aid an upcoming entrepreneur and can set the pace for success. Here are some ways on how to find a trustworthy business mentor.

Find out what your business needs

Find a mentor that has the skills you lack or whom you can learn from the most. If their specialty is people management and that’s the department where you need improvement, then set an appointment or read their books. A mentor is there to help you succeed by sharing with you their vast knowledge. If you are choosing a mentor just because they are successful and not looking at the details carefully, you could end up wasting a lot of time. Find their strength and your weakness and see which one is a good match.

Aligned philosophies and ideals

Some successful business strategies are not worth their weight in moral gold. If a mentor’s idea of success means exploiting your employees or your customers, you don’t have to force yourself into doing the same. In fact, your mentor’s ideals and philosophies should be aligned with yours and not the other way around, says Michael Saltzstein. Focus on the positive aspects of their beliefs, such as learning, thoughtfulness, trust, and determination.
