The Mediator role is renewed every two years and a commoner is chosen at random from the Census records.

At the end of each term (2 years), a manifesto document is sent around the nation with statements from each guildmaster on their aims for the coming years. Newcomers and hopefuls are welcome to submit their own proposals but no one ever has. Those that drum up support in some of the rural regions usually withdraw their submission before it goes to print - for perfectly legitimate reasons. 

A new mediator, by the name of Lady Gloria Esten, has just been selected, and a celebration is due for the whole nation.
