This weeks focus on reading strategies was an excellent ‘thought’ experience for me. My formal education and professional training has provided me the knowledge of utilizing many techniques to help me build fluency in my reading. As a ‘specialist’ in education who has experience working with students of all grade levels and curriculum areas i have had the opportunity to help students build their literacy skills using a variety of techniques.
Alternative means of accessing information around a topic is really important to support reading comprehension and fluency. It helps develop schema and the ‘mindset’ to develop knowledge of the topic and that can open the doors to greater understanding. In ‘Literacy strategies at the secondary level,’ Adrienne Rose identifies the frustration for ELL and struggling readers when there is no prior knowledge or schema for information text (Rose 2000). Using, for example, a YouTube video embedded into a Google Form as a self correcting quiz can give a student ‘schema’ and feedback on their initial introduction to the topic. This is an effective way to engage the student and create a baseline for understanding. Substitution is also an effective way to help build upon literacy strengths to support understanding. Providing informational texts with supporting images, audio / narrations of text and as well as related videos not only aid in comprehension but will support engagement and fluency with the written materials.
With supporting media in place to help develop schema, providing questions and predictions points as well as opportunities to construct character analysis and even ‘video’ recreations to demonstrate understanding can give students ‘targets’ and a sense of ‘purpose’ which is often key to engaging any person (young or old) in the learning process.
