The idea of enjoyment during the learning process impacting achievement is a powerful notion and having strong comprehension skills and reading fluency in middle and high school increases student achievement and happiness. Unfortunately many student struggle with reading comprehension which makes learning difficult. Fortunately, there are strategies teachers can implement & model to help in any classroom. Librarian’s can play an integral role in supporting reading comprehension and fluency by defining strategies and building partnerships with teachers, providing resources to consistently implement them to support reading across the curriculum and to help instill a reading for enjoyment mindset.
Having strong comprehension skills and reading fluency can be the difference between being miserable or having fun while reading and learning in school.
