Assignment Scenario: You are opening a new school library in a school in the City of Anytown, NH. Anytown is a community of about 25,000 people. Demographically, there is a mix of blue and white-collar laborers and the median income is $55,000. Ethnic diversity in the community is slightly less than 5%. Approximately 80% of all high school graduates go on to some form of post-secondary education. The school district in Anytown is made up of three K-5 elementary schools of about 400 students each, one grade 6-8 middle school of 800 students, and one grade 9-12 high school of 1000 students. The curriculum meets the standards in the NH Frameworks.
Remembering that this is a brand new library with empty shelves but ample technology potential, choose one of these schools and build your ideal reference resource collection. Using professional selection tools and the evaluative criteria established in this course, be sure to select materials in multiple formats which address the diverse learning styles, abilities, needs, and interests of young learners and are aligned to the curriculum. Your total collection, consisting of print and non-print resources must adhere to these budget guidelines: $12,000 for elementary; $16,000 for middle or junior high; and $20,000 for a high school. [Please contact us if you wish to mimic a configuration that more closely resembles the one in which you may work and is not included above.] Note that supplies (e.g. batteries) and audiovisual materials (e.g. DVDs) are budgeted separately and should not be included in this budget.
