Paula Heile, Refuges Welcome 2014
In this unit, your final artwork will be inspired by a social issue you are aiming to subvert. Take a look at the links below to help generate some ideas for your artistic intention.
While planning your final artwork, you will want to consider the following prompts to fully develop your artwork with respect to your style, context of the unit and the specific media.
In your document, thoughtfully respond to all of the prompts below. You do not need to respond to all of the prompts before you do the sketches or ask your peers for feedback. Go in the order that makes sense for you.
You can express your responses in the form of sketches, paragraphs, lists, mind maps, annotations, practice pieces etc.
Style:
Your Creativity & Artistic voice
Q. Explain your idea?
Q. What triggered this idea in you? In other words, what was the genesis of this idea?
Q. What kind of imagery best expresses this idea?
Q. Which figures of expression do you want to use to most effectively convey your artistic voice on this topic?
Q. Discuss what makes your idea complex vs. obvious.
Context:
Socially Subversive art
Q. Is your idea actually subversive? What are you trying to subvert?
Q. Is your idea social? (What kind of thinking or behavior are you aiming to change for your audience?)
Q. What would be the ideal reaction from your audience when observing your final work?
Media:
Relief Printmaking
Q. Why is this idea ideal for reduction block printing (simple, graphic, line based, less reliant on value)?
Q. What are your ideas about size and multiples? Do you want to do one big piece or a series?
Q. Where would you ideally exhibit this artwork?
Rafael Garcia Bustillos (sketches) 2017
Once you have a clear idea in words, it's time to start sketching. You will want to sketch first with colored pencil. Show your ideas to your family members or some friends if you can see them now, and use their feedback to refine both your sketches and idea.
Finally, justify which sketch will be your final composition.
Sketch
Combine imagery in three sketches using color pencils to define the color.
Create your sketches in a scaled down proportion of your final idea size and configuration.
Consider how composition plays a role in understanding your piece (balance, dominance, movement)
Take the time to adjust the sketch that you think will be the basis for your final artwork.
Feedback
Seek out feedback from 3 people. First ask them to read your artistic intention and then show them your sketches. Ask them to write their opinions about your ideas and sketches.
*You're trying to figure out which sketch best expresses your artistic intention.
Reflect and Refine
Read your peers feedback and think about how you might incorporate their ideas into your imagery choice, color choices, composition choices and figure of expression.
Clearly identify which sketch will be your final selection moving forward to the creating phase and explain why this is the best choice and what changes you made based on the feedback of your peers.
