Art and Form
Interior design is all about how we experience spaces. It’s a powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, relax, connect and play. Learning to design an interior is an art as it draws on your knowledge of interior materials, physical and structural space, how the visual qualities of a room impact our emotional wellbeing and the items in those rooms that make spaces both functional and enjoyable to use. During this unit, students will gain insight into how interior designers work, what they value, how they draw their ideas and how to work with a client.
This unit is interdisciplinary and will be taught with support from our Physics and Mathematics departments.
Art and Memory
Artist's have the ability to record memories for different purposes. An artist might show exactly what happened in order to record the event or they can show a memory in an unexpected way to change the way people think about and understand an event. Knowing this, many artists use art to tell stories about personal and cultural memories that are open to interpretation, that reframe the past to show different points of view. This allows us to think carefully about our history, who's interpretation was recorded, how we view history and how to document history for future generations. During this unit, students will learn realistic drawing skills to draw a memory demonstrating how the memory has changed overtime.
This unit is interdisciplinary and will be taught with support from our Psychology department and a visiting guest speaker.
Art and Converging Cultures
Throughout history, economic needs, material desires, and political ambitions have brought people from different cultures and communities into contact, sometimes across great distances. Whether clashes or cooperative endeavors, these convergences have brought about the exchange of knowledge and ideas. In the visual arts, cultural diffusion has led to creative juxtapositions, hybrid styles, innovative forms, and the reinterpretation of traditional signs and symbols. During this unit, students will investigate how cultures converge to create new forms of art. They will create a ceramic hybrid dinnerware set that combines the traditions of two distinct cultures.
