Task: Complete all of the workshops to practice the skills used in the memory unit.
Add a record of your workshops to the PADLET
In your first workshop, click on the picture to the left and watch the video. Go get your own lemon and set it up with a single light source (bright window or lamp) and follow his steps to draw your piece of fruit.
SKILLS:
Convey form
Convey a single light source
Practice the cross-hatching mark

In your second workshop, your goal is to simply replicate the drawing to the left. As you can see, the sphere is closest to you, then the cone, pyramid, cube and finally the hexagon. Your goal is to show a light source shining strongly from the left side making flat shapes look like forms. You can start with pencil to create the overlapping effect but erase it once you have everything in place. Then take your pen or thin marker and replicate the hatch lines on the forms, cast shadows on the table and in the background.
SKILLS:
Approximate the spacial distance between the objects
Draw the objects in proportion
Create space in the artwork
Convey form
Convey a single light source
Create proportionate shadows
Practice the hatching mark

In your third workshop, choose two different pens with different weights. Set up your paper like the example to the left. There should be 8 vertical columns and 5 horizontal. Each vertical column will be a different type of mark and each horizontal column is a value. Add values: 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 beside your horizontal columns. The goal of this workshop, is to match the value with the different mark type and different weight pen.
SKILLS:
Match the value
Try two different weight pens
Try all 4 marks paying attention to how dense the lines need to be in order to create the matching value.
In your fourth workshop, you will experiment with different weight pens to replicate the textures found in these three elements of nature. Implied texture is "faked" texture. You are creating the illusion of a 3D surface in a 2D representation. Your goal is to match the scale, textures and values found in the original picture.
SKILLS:
Match the values
Experiment with different weight pens to vary the proximity paying attention to how dense the lines need to be in order to create the matching value.
Try all 4 marks to see which line type matches the texture
pay attention to the direction of the line so it matches the direction of the lines in the photo
In your fifth workshop, you will draw one of the following reflective images. Drawing reflective objects takes acute observation of the crisp edges that quickly change in tonality. Smooth gradation and high contrast areas (highlights and shadows) are necessary for the form or surface to pop. Since the scenery that is being reflected is often distorted, use a pencil to map out the area before starting with the pen.
Now that you have completed 5 formative workshops (1. Proportion, 2. Value study, 3. Implied texture, 4. Scaling and Reflections, 5. Combining Images) let’s see what you’ve learned. With your partners, respond to the following prompts for each workshop.
Label each workshop
Describe WHAT you learned in the workshop and HOW the technique is achieved.
For example, the aim of the value study was to create a full range of values (light and dark areas) from 2-10 using a variety of marks and two different pens in a smooth gradient. How you achieve this is by varying the proximity (closeness) of the lines, changing the weight of the pen and stepping back from your drawing periodically to see how the values are aligning.
3. State one tip that you think is the most helpful reminder for artists while working with this technique
4. Use all of the vocabulary somewhere in your responses. Highlight or underline these key words when you use them.
