Designers - the note below is being distributed to all editors. Please read through this carefully and ask questions to the management team if you need any clarification on the new procedure. With this new process, we will need to be extra careful that we are approving pages with the correct content. Things to watch out for as your approve these second proofs:
Double-check that the correct content was placed on the page. You can check for dates on pages that contain History, Comics, etc.
That the correct time zone is placed on modules that require them (ex: Sports schedules and TV What to Watch)
That turn lines and jump lines have the correct page numbers and sections (ex: Food)
Page labels are not duplicated on the page. If a site asks for a specific label, make sure you are taking off any labels that come on automatically with the shared content modules.
All type is visible on the proof. Some modules are still built to snap to a baseline grid - keep an eye out for overset text.
If you get any complaints/questions from editors, please direct those to a member of the Senior Leadership team.

Pages with Shared Content Modules Only
The local news division leadership team and Design Center leadership agreed to streamline proofing of the National Newsroom shared content modules/pages. Those content modules are proofed by at least 2 editors within the National Newsroom before being placed on your pages.
The Design Center will be sending all pages that have only shared content modules to 2nd proof which will save newsrooms time during the production cycle. This procedure is effective starting on March 25, 2024.
Here is a list of additional information regarding the shared content modules/pages.
Pages that will still go to first proof are:
All Nation & World modules so editors can check that the right option was placed and that stories are not duplicated on A1 or elsewhere in the edition.
Any page that has local content or a local change to a shared content page. This would include these Sports RECAP modules that sometimes have local score inserts or story swaps: MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, College football and NCAA Tournament.
Some things to note with this change:
All shared regional module pages (example: Week in Nebraska, Virginia Opinion) will need editor approval prior to being distributed amongst the sites. Editors will need to respond to Special Presentation email with fixes marked on the PDF proof or that the page is ready. Please keep in mind that some sites have deadlines as early as noon on publications days.
You will still be able to modify page labels on shared content pages, but these will still go straight to 2nd proof.
Editors will still be able to view these pages via RPM in the "Proof Preview" window. Any errors should be reported to your daily designer via Slack who can make the corrections and reproof the page.
Please send additional questions to Carlos Ayulo and Tammy Yttri.
Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation.

Quick guide to what goes to 1st and 2nd proof?
Here's a quick reference from Katie Klein to when a page goes to first proof or second proof:
Nation/World shared mod - first proof
Weather - first proof (unless it's an EE night for 3-day pubs)
PDF obit (full page, no editorial) - first proof
Shared opinion - second proof
Shared opinion with local substitutes - first proof
Shared content - second proof
Shared content with any editorial content - first proof
Shared market page - first proof
Partial/full class we place - second proof (add link to RPM notes)
Retail full - direct output single
Panorama - combine pages on a spread, direct output spread
Spadia - remove folio, send to second
There are obviously a few exceptions to the rules for special sites like BUF, so reach out to a team lead or senior with any questions.
