John 1:43-51
Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael
43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
“Come and see,” said Philip.
47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
50 Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
Jesus meets Nathanael and gives him a straightforward assessment of his character as the Messiah sees Him...Jesus was making a direct observation about Nathanael's character...Jesus saw him as a genuine Israelite, someone who followed God's laws and lived with integrity...
"True Israelites" were known for their adherence to religious laws, which weren't always followed perfectly...Jesus might be acknowledging Nathanael's sincerity while knowing that the only "Sinless True Israeli" is the One talking to Nathanael...Jesus might be highlighting a contrast between Nathanael's sincerity and the hypocrisy of some of the religious leaders...Nathanael's genuine faith stood out compared to those who might have appeared outwardly devout but lacked true integrity...This verse about Nathaniel's character could also be seen as setting the stage for Nathanael's encounter with Jesus...Jesus recognizing Nathanael's good qualities might make him more receptive to Jesus' message...
Nathanael's responses to Jesus...Nathanael's question ("How do you know me?") suggests surprise at Jesus' knowledge of him...This could imply Nathanael wasn't widely known for his good deeds, but Jesus saw his true character...Jesus' has the ability to see into people's hearts...This verse could be another example of Jesus' discernment and His feeling that Nathaniel would make a good disciple...Nathanael's quickly declares: ”Rabbi, You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”...This is a powerful statement by Nathanael and he has judged Him quickly...He recognizes Jesus' Divinity ("Son of God") and His role as the Messiah ("King of Israel")...
There could be a few reasons for Nathanael's sudden realization that Jesus is the Anointed One: Jesus' insightful remark about him (John 1:47) might have convinced him of Jesus' special abilities...There could be something significant about Jesus mentioning seeing Nathanael "under the fig tree" (John 1:48)...Perhaps Jesus, being Divine, had seen Nathaniel in a private moment of prayer or contemplation, revealing Nathanael's sincerity to Jesus...Jesus says to Nathanael ”You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree.”...Jesus literally may have saw Nathanael under a fig tree at some point before there first encounter...This could have been a private moment of prayer, meditation, or reflection, revealing something about Nathanael's character or spiritual seeking to Jesus...This could be a symbolic interpretation...The fig tree is seen as a symbolic element...Fig trees often represented peace, solitude, or spiritual seeking in Jewish culture...Jesus seeing Nathanael "under the fig tree" could symbolize his awareness of Nathanael's inner thoughts and sincerity, even in a private moment...
The fig tree comment is important...Regardless of whether it's literal or symbolic, Jesus' knowledge of this detail surprises Nathanael...The passage of the fig tree maybe interpreted as symbolic....Jesus seeing Nathanael under a fig tree might symbolize His awareness of Nathanael's inner thoughts and sincerity...This meeting and dialogue between the two sets the stage for Nathanael's future journey as an Original Disciple...Jesus is hinting at the great things he will witness and the role he will play with Jesus...The passage maybe open to interpretation, but it does emphasizes one's development of faith (in this specific case, Nathanael) and the special role Jesus plays as the Son of Man and how important His Disciples will be in Spreading this now new Gospel of Jesus around the world...
This surprise question of: "How do you know me?" might be because: Nathanael didn't think anyone saw him in his privacy...The fig tree place maybe wasn't publicly known...The timing or content of his prayers/reflections were private...Jesus mentions this because He intends to earn Nathanael's trust by demonstrating He does has special knowledge...This will definitely encourage Nathanael to open up and share his beliefs...This speaks of Jesus' Own Divine knowledge and insight...
Jesus' humbleness comes through in their conversation...Jesus seems to downplay the significance of Nathanael's belief based on this conversation alone...True faith, Jesus suggests, should go beyond being impressed by miracles or special knowledge that One has...”You will see greater things than that.”...Jesus promises Nathanael that he will witness even more extraordinary things, hinting at His future His miracles and His teachings and His resurrection...”Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”...This is a cryptic but a significant statement...It alludes to a vision from Jacob in the Old Testament (Genesis 28:10-12) where Jacob saw angels ascending and descending from heaven...Jesus, by calling Himself the "Son of Man," connects Himself to this lineage and suggests a direct connection between heaven and earth through Him...Jesus is a Gate to Heaven...Jesus is able to have heaven open and come to earth and walk through Heaven's Gate...And He has walked through Heaven's Gate and is talking to Nathanael about it and many other deep subjects...
These passages and Jesus' initial meeting with Nathaniel highlights the importance of a faith that goes beyond simply witnessing miracles...Jesus seems to be encouraging Nathanael to develop a deeper level of understanding and belief and to mature his faith as they go out on their new ministry...
