John 1:35-42
Jesus First Disciples
35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
37When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?"
They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"
39"Come," he replied, "and you will see."
So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.
40Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). 42And he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter).
In the Gospel According to St. John, Jesus first appearance is when He meets His first disciples...The first disciple (mentioned by name) is a follower of John the Baptist...His name is Andrew...
John the Baptist sees Jesus walking by...John says , "Look, the Lamb of God!"...Andrew (and another disciple) hears John the Baptist say this and starts following Jesus...Jesus ask the two, "What do you want?"...They call Jesus Rabbi, and ask where are You staying...Andrew goes and finds his brother Simon Peter and brings him to meet Jesus...Andrew tells Peter, they have found the Messiah...The two disciples have never answered Jesus, original question of what do (you two) want...
The two disciples probably wanted at first to meet this Lamb of God, which John the Baptist had identified...John the Baptist had disciples, so these two would have a lot of respect for what John would have to say...So, they were curious to meet Jesus... Remember John had been preparing the way for the Messiah... Since it was John who was preaching and preparing His way, Andrew would make the connection of Jesus, the Lamb of God, and the Messiah...John may have even told Andrew, that Jesus was the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah they had been waiting for...
The question from Jesus remains today...What do you seek of Him???...It may start out like Andrew with a curious one, but it will grow as you follow Him...We all seek Him for personal reasons...Do you want something more than what is here on earth???...Do you want to be closer to God???...Do you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit???...Do you want a Great Comforter???...Do you want to be with God eternally???...
Why do you seek Jesus???...Like Andrew and the other disciple, He invites us without delay...We may have others, like John the Baptist, who bring us to Jesus...But then the question comes up...Andrew may have not known why he was seeking Jesus when Jesus first ask, but I have no doubt Andrew knew after his time spent with Jesus...Think about why you are seeking Him, that is why He ask...
