John 1:35-39
Disciples Follow Jesus
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?”
They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
Matthew 6:19-21
Treasures in Heaven
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Luke 9:58
Jesus Had No Place to Lay His Head
58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Luke 12:15
Life Is Not About an Abundance of Possessions
15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
It seems we like to collect or have or just simply accumulate material things starting with a home and a car and them we add to those things...Sometimes we add quite a bit of material things throughout our lives to what we already have...Some of those things we wind up keeping and some we discard...Some of the things we own wind up in storage or in our attics...But those things we have collected are ours and at the time we get thing -they seem somewhat important...We most of the time think we need that something or that we want that particular thing...We just seem to have this innate desire for things...But is this desire to collect and have things a long thought out thing and are the things we own very permanent things ...It seems some of the things we own over the years wind up getting sold or traded for something else...But we do seem to wind up with something else or something different to have and to store on earth...
Jesus had no permanent home on earth after He grew up and left His home with Mary and Joseph...He was raised in a poor family, yet He always knew where His heart was...And His heart did not desire possessions...He did not have many, if any, material things...The gospels do not mention much of His possessions...His life did not mean having an abundance of material things...Material things were not important to Him...He did not treasure any material thing...I do not think He stored anything...He did not believe in storing up things on earth, because things rust or someone might try to steal it -and He reminds us of this...I think He only owned what He could carry from village to village and town to town...
When I think about what His treasures were as He taught, I can really only think of a few things...Of course I know He LOVED God...But I think what He treasured most on this earth was us...
