John 13:18-30
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18"I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'
19"I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. 20I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."
21After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me."
22His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."
25Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
26Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. 27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
"What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, 28but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. 30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
Jesus knows that soon He will be betrayed...He tells His disciples that He will be betrayed by one of His disciples and He is telling them now, so they will know that I AM He...
The disciple whom Jesus loved is John...John is sitting or reclining next to Jesus...Peter asks John, to ask Him which one He means...
Maybe Peter and the other disciples should have ask "Could it be me?""...We are all capable of sin...That is inherit in humanity... Sins keep us separate from God...Jesus had just shown the disciples the humility of love by washing their feet and now this...The biggest sin of the disciples lives, was being discussed...Sin is all around, we must remember this and keep our guard up, by praying constantly and without ceasing to our Father...
John does ask Jesus, "LORD, who is it"...Jesus answers John that it is the one who will eat the dipped bread...The dipped bread of Jesus is ate by Judas...When Judas eats it, satan enters him...We know in John 13:2 that satan had prompted Judas to betray Jesus during the evening meal, and satan had won...John does not realize at this time what any of this means...None of the disciples realize that Judas is going to betray Him...They only would realize it later...
Only Judas of the Twelve understands what Jesus means, when He says, "What you are about to do, do quickly"...What tremendous stress would be on the shoulders of Judas, when he heard this...He would later commit suicide over this decision...
The disciples think Judas is off on an act of humility or love, learned from the lesson of Jesus washing his feet, but instead, he is off plotting Jesus' arrest...
We are told in verse thirty and thirty one, that Judas took the bread and them went out...And it was night...
The man who had just had his feet washed, and eaten with Him, has left...Judas in his last few hours has left the light and fled into the darkness..
He who shares my bread has lifted his heel against me (Psalm 41:9)...The scripture would be fulfilled...
