Outlast contains lots of "cold" colours in most of the game's visuals. In this scene, we can see their is purple and blue used at the end of the hallway that contrasts the colours before it. This has been done to create a cold, scary atmosphere and to give the theory that the end of the hallway is different in some way, cleverly using colour theory to promote the horror within this scene.
There are many different combinations of colours that fit well together phycological.
Complementary colours and split complementary colours provide an even field of positive feelings and emotions. These combination of colours can be used to promote happiness / excitement within a game.
Warm and cool colours are used within specific environments that help to immerse the player. For example, a warm forest, like in the game firewatch, their will usually be summer colours for the trees, leaves and ground of colours such as yellow, orange and red with the colours of blue, violet and dark blue appearing during colder moments such as the nighttime and in the autumn season.
As we can see, the colours used resemble warmth and coolness during different parts of the game, even using moderate colours such as green to imply the temperature is cool but not as cool as shades of blue.
The game firewatch uses colours very similar to seasonal colours depending on the state of the current environment within the game. This, whilst allowing the user to easily identify the season, also makes the game more scenery based and enjoyable for players that enjoy the visuals of a game.
