Sir Archibald Ernest Orr Ewing had been elected to membership of the ISC on 13th April 1896. In earlier years he had been a captain in the 3rd Battalion Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders Royal Archers (Kings Bodyguard of Scotland). He was MP for Dumbarton between 1868 and 1892. He lived in London and was also a member of the RYS, the Royal Albert YC, the Royal Northern YC, the Royal Victoria YC, and the RYA. Lloyds List of 1912 records that he owned the 52-ton steam yacht Boomerang and also a 6-ton sailing cutter Strathendrick.
