 Dear Mr Damant,

The Duke of Edinburgh and I are so grateful to the members of the Island Sailing Club for their great generosity in subscribing to give us a "Dragon" as a wedding present. It is pleasant indeed to think that we shall soon be able to sail in the Solent, and we are looking forward to that day with impatience. For my part, I am particularly glad that through the kindness of the Members of the Island Sailing Club, I shall be able to share my husband's love of the sea and all that belongs to it.

Will you please tell all who subscribed how delighted we are with their most welcome and acceptable present?

Yours sincerely,

Frank Beken

Frank Beken moved to the Isle of Wight in 1888 with his father Alfred from Canterbury. His father purchased an existing pharmacy in Cowes. The sight of yachts sailing past Frank's bedroom window made such an impression on him that he decided to capture these images on film.

After several attempts, it was soon obvious that the cameras available at the time were not suited to the rough seas encountered, so Frank designed and built a new-style camera instead of the usual canvas bellows, he used two wooden box-frames. One encloses a screw-thread focusing system and shutter, with the other frame housing a viewfinder. It was a forerunner to the later twin-lens cameras although it was fired by biting a rubber ball held between the teeth.

It was Frank's bedroom window that also provided the light source for his 'daylight powered enlarger' which enabled him to make saleable prints from his negatives. The Beken Pharmacy sold these photographs alongside their medicines and perfumes and undoubtedly due to Queen Victoria's Royal residence being nearby at Osborne, it was recorded that five crowned heads of Europe visited the Pharmacy premises at one time!

This picture is hanging in the entrance hall to the BEKEN ROOM.

Keith Beken

Frank was joined by his son Keith in the 1930s. Keith had qualified as a chemist and during WW II skippered an Air Sea Rescue launch based in Cowes. Keith photographed the famous J-Class, started colour photography in the 1950s, and later took his cameras to various sailing regattas in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

Frank died in 1970 and it was decided that the pharmacy should be sold and the photography side of the business should stand alone. Keith was joined by his son Kenneth and a new company called 'Beken of Cowes' was established exclusively photographing afloat and selling the marine photographs that have made the Beken name famous throughout the sailing scene.

The Beken of Cowes Marine Photography Gallery is now popular with yachtsmen from all over the world who come to see the classic historical photographs, as well as the colour images, taken of today's racing and cruising craft. Those unable to visit access the Beken website at www.beken.co.uk

Keith retired from photography afloat in the mid-1990s after taking the famous photograph of the "Silk II" pitch-pole incident.

Keith died in February 2007, aged 92.

This picture is hanging in the entrance hall to the BEKEN ROOM.

Kenneth Beken

Keith's son Kenneth joined "Beken of Cowes" to become the third photographer in line taking the photographs that have made the Beken name famous throughout the sailing scene. In over 45 years he has covered Worldwide gatherings such as Tall Ship Races, Offshore Powerboat Races, America's Cup Races, International Sailing Regattas, plus numerous Dinghy and windsurfing events. Beken changed to taking their photographs digitally 2005 Beken changed to taking their photographs digitally. In 2008 with the advancement in the quality of digital printing came the move to supply all prints digitally too, and after 120 years of service, the darkrooms were finally closed.

This picture was taken in 1935 long before the present clubhouse was built in 1962. Some of the pictures shown here are still being displayed in the club today.

This picture is hanging in the stairwell near the Bar Entrance.

In 1992 the clubroom had been refurbished. The design by Heather Sutherland, daughter of a member, achieved a happy mixture of traditional and modern ideas which presented our three prize assets, the burgee collection, the view and the bar, at their best. Keith Beken's amazing enlargements of five of his family's best photographs added the perfect finishing touch. The following 5 photos are of the Kitchen & Bar shutters

'The Duke of Edinburgh's racing flag'

Prince Philip Racing Flag

This missing frame has been found recently in one of the Club's Cellars. It has the racing flag from 'Prince Philip' and as can be seen, it is brown. (This cannot be explained as the colour should be 'green' as can be seen opposite!) This is mentioned on a label on the back of the frame. The stitching in Roman numerals of 27 in the top left corner can not be explained.

Image of the actual Racing Flag

Greenfield charged with a black stylized image of Edinburgh Castle on a white disk fimbriated black. Despite the absence of her Royal owners, Bluebottle flew the Royal couple’s racing flag which, for the first season, consisted of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s cypher in gold on a dark blue background. Prince Philip decided to replace this design during the winter of 1948/49 because he thought the detail was too complicated to see at a distance. Therefore, he opted for a dark green flag with a black heraldic Edinburgh Castle within a white circle."

These two Beken prints have been left to the Club by John and Beth Effemey's family in memory of their parents.
