Michael Tennant

Commodore 1989-1992

Michael Humphrey Tennant Commodore 1989 to 1992. Born 11th September 1942 in Luton Bedfordshire. Educated at Bedford Modern School and University College London. Admitted as a solicitor in November 1966. Became a partner in Damant & Sons (subsequently, merged with Glanvilles). Appointed as a District Judge in 1984 (full time) and Recorder in 1989 (part-time appointment) trying civil, family, commercial and criminal cases, retiring (full time) in 2008 after serving as president of The Association of Her Majesty’s District Judges, sitting part-time until 2017.

Learned to sail on the River Ouse while at school. Joined ISC in 1967, sailed Enterprises and XODs. Bought a Pandora (22ft sloop) in 1973. Bought a National Sonata (‘Xantz’) in 1983. Campaigned in the Solent, including RIR, Cowes Week and National Sonata Championships, acquiring more than enough tankards and glassware to stock a country pub. Gave Sonata to Greig City Academy Sailing Club in 2020 when concluded that because of age was likely to become the laughing stock of the National Sonata Association.


In addition, participated in Sonata international competition in Hong Kong in 1986 and cruised with a friend in the Mediterranean and Spanish and Portuguese coasts.
