H.M.S. Martin

'H.M.S. Martin'

Wikipedia lists twelve ships of the Royal Navy that have the name H.M.S. Martin. The plaque on this model states she had been an 8-gun sailing brig of 508 tons and launched on 8th October 1790. I believe this date should be 1890. She was the last square-rigged sailing ship built for the Royal Navy and the last wooden hull. This vessel had been broken up in 1944 after spending her later years as a coaling craft C23. Originally H.M.S. Martin had been an eight-gun sailing brig of 508 tons launched in 1890. She had served as a training ship for boys at H.M.S. Vincent until 1903.

There was an H.M.S.Martin was built in 1790 as a 14-gun sloop. She was founded in 1800

It is not certain when or how the club acquired the model, but it was not until seven years after the completion of the new clubhouse that this model was given a good refit by Harry Hedley, that highly skilled model maker, and then placed in a gap in the stairwell close to the wheel, where it is to this day.
