Captain James Orr Ewing

Commodore 1903-1909

We know little of the background of this gentleman, but he was a Captain in the 4th Dragoons and it is also probable that he was ADC to Lord Roberts in Ireland.

Capt. Orr Ewing retired from the Army quite a while before taking flag rank at the ISC. Charles Sibbick the Cowes boat builder, built him a boat which he named Norman. He raced her very successfully and had a second boat in 1984 built by Sibbick in only ten days. She was called Shrimp and was raced with much success. His sailing is recorded as having left the other members of the class most depressed.

Yet another boat was built for him in 1895. She was named Anglia and was designed to take advantage of the French rule, to compete in Mediterranean regattas. In 1891 White and Son of Cowes had built him a boat of 25tons described as a wooden screw yawl. His Forty won the Queens Cup regatta in 1896.
