Cole Phillips Report

COVID-19-Related School Closings: USA and Europe - A Contribution to the Comparative Analysis of COVID-19 Pandemic Responses (Fall 2020)

What the student said:

Through my experience in the Illinois in Vienna internship program, and the close mentorship provided through it, I was able to better understand the multi-faceted challenge that the COVID-19 pandemic poses, as well as the associated issues with our means of addressing it. Thanks to my mentor encouraging me to further explore the range of impacts associated with the closures and reopenings of schools worldwide, I was able to see the crisis through lenses I otherwise never would have considered during my research.

What the mentor said:

Covid-19 is certainly the topic of 2020.  As a Family Nurse Practitioner working in a school in Vienna, I was curious about the impact the closure of schools due to Coronavirus had on students. Cole matched my curiosity with an enthusiasm to explore almost every facet of school closure and re-opening. His final paper can serve as a springboard for any number of further, in-depth probes into psycho-social and socio-economic research into this same question for years to come. I enjoyed my role as mentor to help guide his discovery and evaluation of public health decisions in real-time.
