IRYNA SUKHNATSKA

Illinois Degree:  Political Science 2012

Spring Semester 2011 in Vienna

Having previously enjoyed travel abroad with family and paired with the University of Illinois extensive study abroad programs, and encouragement from family and friends who had studied abroad previously motivated me to do so myself.

Being able to study under internationally recognized experts in their respective fields was especially rewarding; one of my professors had to postpone classes by a week because of how many interview requests he was receiving  immediately following the killing of Osama bin Laden really made it feel like we were at the center of the international political stage. Other unique opportunities, including visits to the United Nations and meetings with respective diplomats. And of course getting to know Vienna, Professor Murray, and traveling to the various cities in Austria, as well as neighboring countries made it an unforgettable experience.

It forced all of us (participants) to develop skills we would likely not have an opportunity to do so without having studied abroad, learning a new language, adopting to a foreign country/culture, getting by not speaking local languages, and building relationships with people from different cultures, resulted in developing invaluable skills and confidence that I continue to rely on in my career whether meeting new clients, overcoming obstacles, or traveling abroad for business and meeting with foreign business professionals.
