Chas Berckmann

BA German Language and Literature + Finance, 1999

Academic Year 1997-1998 in Vienna

Chas’ decision to study German and Austrian literature and culture was a mélange of curiosity and happenstance: “I had German roots, so a German major seemed logical, but would it be the best strategic choice? My interest in studying in Vienna was initially piqued when a close friend mentioned studying abroad in England. One day after class, I was strolling the 4th floor of FLB, saw a Vienna Program brochure, and knew then – I’m going to Vienna! Thankfully, I was accepted for the 1997-1998 academic year.”

In Vienna, Chas immersed himself in Austrian culture through program-sponsored events and a plethora of activities arranged by his socially active Austrian roommate, who remains a close friend. With the program, he seamlessly navigated German-speaking regions on native terms.

A highlight was Chas’ participation in the Vienna City Marathon. He finished 95th and was the top American finisher.

After graduation, Chas landed a job with Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York, which led to an internal transfer to the Zurich, Switzerland office in 2002. The transfer would not have been possible without his participation in the program, which enhanced his ability to master German and regional dialects.

Chas later pursued a Master of International Affairs at Columbia University, focusing on Energy and Environmental Policy. He currently works in Frankfurt, Germany as a credit analyst at Moody’s Investors Service in the infrastructure and utilities team, providing credit ratings and research primarily on German-regulated electric network companies and utilities (Amprion, EWE, Eurogrid, Entega Netz to name a few).
